I'm looking into getting a big screen tv. i planned on getting a 42" plasma but a few guys at work said they only last about 5 years. What do you guys think? I don't trust the guys at circutt city cause they just want to make a sell.

DLP is the way to go.
Plasma has a lifespan of XX,XXX hours. My 42 Panasonic just went out, one of the boards inside is fried, and it's gonna cost like $1500 to repair, so I just took it off the wall and hanged a picture in its place and bought a new 65 Sony DLP.
I agree.. i have a hitachi lcd rear projection and love itOriginally Posted by Negrodamus

We've had our 42" Panasonic HD Plasma for about 8 months now, and no problems yet. Whatever you do don't buy the extended warranty. Cause the price continues to drop. The price for our TV has dropped almost $100 a month since we got it.
tell that to the customers that decided not to buy it when they come back to the store to find out what to do with their 42'' paper wieght. i have seen numerous nes get replaced/fixed due to the performance plan we offer... check with clark howard he even says to get it...Originally Posted by civic95

Ha ha, the 3yr plan was another $800. By then the TV will be $1600-$2000. So half the cost of a new one to have your old one fixed. I'd rather buy a new one, than get my old one fixed for $800.
42" plaz. phillips got it 2 months ago its a cool tv, but i dont use it much.

Ours was $3400, and they wanted $800 more for a 3 yr warranty (parts and labor). I read some article that said something like 90% of the problems occur within the first yr (which is covered under manufacturer warranty). And, that if it made it past that it would not likely have any problems for a while. At any rate if something did happen in the next couple years, I would rather apply that $800 to a newer TV, with better quality, and picture than our current one. And it will probably be priced around what we paid for ours or cheaper by that point. Panasonic already has a newer model 42" that replaced our model.
