GRAND-AM: Merger Press Conference Set For Wednesday Morning
interesting news. I'm for it, why not? Take the two best road racing series in the US and combine them? Add to that the majority owner, Grand AM as well as the speed channel are owned by NASCAR, and road racing needs "nascar" money to become more mainstream in the US. Could be good for promting road racing to the die hard NASCAR fans our there.
Your say on the ALMS/ Grand Am merger.
My 2 cents.
This might offend some, but here's how i see. Grand Am's fan base comes from trying to give Nascar fan's something to relate to in sports car racing. This forces the cars to be simple spec like contraption with stickers being the only real difference. Real sports car racing requires technical innovation and is not a show comes first mentality. This isn't a circus, it's motorsport. The push for technology results in incredible machinery. We love the Porsche 917 even though it obliterated all the other cars it competed against. The 917 has stood the test of time because it set a precedent that defined all sports car racing stood for. That is why it was the car chosen to shape the Group C cars of the 80's. I seriously hope the France family realizes that even in the USA, most of the sports car community hates what Nascar represents to motorsport and will stand against anything they bring over to our sport.
I don't see Grand-Am aiming for a spec like series (DP for example). We have all heard rumors of LMP2 and DP being combined with different engine choices allowed for DP, which in my opinion would be cool. ALMS GT is 99% for sure still in. I don't see why LMP1 really matters, I mean as much as I WANT LMP1 to be there, there's just no competition right NOW.
I think this is all for the good of US sports car racing and you know I have never been a GA fan.

NASCAR fans DON'T LIKE road racing, they're fully aware of what it is. They just typically don't like it. NASCAR is easy to follow. One driver, one class, simple racing. We can all admit sports car racing can be confusing as all get out for anyone looking in, it takes some looking into to understand, it's a different ball game.
Just because NASCAR owns Grand-Am and is partnering with the ALMS doesn't mean everything will be dumbed down though and NASCAR fans will start coming to ALMS/Grand-Am races. Ever been to a NASCAR race in person? It's awesome. It's also very impressive on the scale of marketing, which is a good thing.
I don't like saying NASCAR owns our loved form of racing...but...what can we do?

Im reading around all the articles that feel like sponsor speak. If i see something that reads, "we fully support this," ask yourself why they would say that.
So in this example, the ACO still wants American teams going over there irregardless of the series. Consider the state of the European Le Mans series. You think 3 LMP1 teams are bad, the European series is having tiny grids with no name teams. As far the ACO is concerned, the ACO wants people like RISI, Corvette racing, Dyson, traveling to Europe for Le Mans. There were teams in the IMSA GTP era that never went to Europe like Penske did when he ran the RS Spyder.
Let the DPs make more power and have a little more aero freedom. If they do combine with P2 then they may not be so boring anymore.
Then they wouldn't be DP's
