Default 318 issues; are they worth fixing

alright. i went back out to the guys house to take a more in depth look at the car. there's a problem. when you put the key in: 1) the car will will but wont start and 2) even with the key in the on position, the sterring column will not unlock. is this common with the E36, and if so, is it easy to fix? also, is it worth fixing? so far as it not starting, my guess is its the immobilizer. i, unfortunately, didnt take any tools w/ me (didnt think i was gonna need any) so i was unable to check for spark and/or fuel. any suggestoins? as mentioned in my other thread, any and all help is appreciated.
