id say stay safe with 8 and a good tune being that it is your first turbo car. you dont want to get over zealous and pop it. what size turbo will you be using?

What d series do you have and what is the general health of the engine? A compression/leakdown test will help decide the best answer.

I know a story recent at that

Some one had a perfect motor with no issues and super low miles

like 40k and someone also told him that he will tune this to run great and last

he beat the shit out of it as I watched for 3 hours... yes he did some cool downs and then did it again but Beat the shitttt out of it to stretched as much power as he could with less care of what he is doing to someone elses car!!!!

after all said he got 225 hp and then BAM!! POPPED the guy told him that he wanted to only reach 195 hp was his goal and something that would last him... NO he is out of all this money and 600 bucks for a chip and 3 hour tune!!!!

so you like that story or do you want to be safe?

I will not tell names due to its IA's rules

I have had mannnny turbo cars, want to be safe or trust people lashing out what they have done and got lucky doing it...

Are they going to pay to fix your car when it breaks ???? NO

So do what you feel is safe and what your willing to spend. If you dont care about blowing it up then shitt hit 15psi

advice that should be heeded - pushing an engine to the limits of it's mechanical engineering is just asking for a short lifespan. overbuild - underboost.

don't get crazy with it - notice Josh said "...in a few months." Which is very, very true.

^^what he said. especially with your motor having that many miles. i wouldnt think of boosting my motor at my current mileage (180,xxx). but if you insist do a compression test n leak down test. goodluck with it man

^^mileage means nothing if it was taking care of and the compression/leakdown is good, ive seen a 200k mile gsr get on the dyno boosted and make 300whp and 200ish trq 9 lbs and held it like a champ...engine ended up going like a year later to a rod bearing

soo.... after one year it dies.

turbos add a good bit of power, but with power, more heat and stress is thus created. first you must combat this heat (coolent temp, calendar head temp, oil temp, combustion temp ) and stress on internals is going to happen as well. sure a good tune will get you where you need to go, but power should be the last thing. reliability is key.

Ed at Balanced Performance tuned my SOHC supercharged setup, and my turbo setup with a t3/t4 at 15psi about 3 years ago. Its my DD and I beat the shit out of it and not a single problem yet. Then JJSPEC street tuned my EF Hatch t3 setup at 8 psi, and that motor had 160,xxx miles on it. Again no problems.
