Or maybe Mazda wanted to make an affordable turbo car that actually looks good *ahem Dodge and Chevy*

Plus, it's got a side mount intercooler. Yes it's not the biggest turbo out there, however it does have the ability to push 15 psi in such a small package. However, the engine can only take about 10 without some major upgrades.

    6psi FTL!

Yeah. how much was your car?

mine will hold 20 lbs safely and with less than a grand will push 300 hp.

And i bet it was cheaper than the msrp on the MSP.

OK... I didn't say the MSP was "The best car ever created." What I am saying is that the MSP is probably the best looking sport compact I've seen in a while. The Dodge Neon SRT-4 coming in a close second. I actually passed an SRT-4 daily that was for sale, and seriously contemplated asking the wife to purchase it.

Here are my complaints with many of the "sport compacts" that have come out recently.

Nissan SE-R - When they were first introduced, they were alright. Not turboed which bothered me. The newer versions... hideous, on all acounts.
Chevy Cobalt SS - I liked them the year they were in concept form. I wanted one. Then I realized how boring they really are. Going turbo over a supercharger was a good idea I think, but overall, it looks like a regular Cobalt inside and out.
Dodge Neon SRT-4 - As stated above, I still think they look pretty damn sexy. The exhaust note is second to none from the factory in the comparo here. It still just doesn't have that appeal I want. It's trying to hard to be a muscle car when it will never be a Challenger or GTO.
ANY newer model of GTI or ANY STI - Fuck that price range. The new ones look like ass IMO.
MSP - Back in the day actually held the reins pretty well against the competition. I think it looks the best from the factory (especially the 03.5 model change). There were a few drawbacks but I loved the car then, and am especially happy I got one now.
Civic Si - Way overpriced for what it is. At least it's reliable? (the question mark is because I can't vouch as I've never owned one. Being a Honda it should be but who knows)

The only problem is you can't really compare the MSP to any other sport compact because it was the last production Protege Mazda made. So now you'd have to compare with the MS3 which in my opinion, is the best sport compact EVER built to date. In any comparo done by a non-biased party, it's ranked #1 in the past 4-5 years. Even against it's AWD opposition.

As for the price, I don't know what it was new because I bought my previously drug the fuck out. I believe it was MSRP of 25K but nobody with a brainstem paid more than 20K, if that, brand new.

    Just to recap...

MSP > MS3 > SRT-4 (Neon, not Caliber) > STI (fucking pricetag) > GTI (fucking pricetag) > Civic Si (Mugen, if it wasn't just for looks) > Older SE-R > Cobalt SS

    I'm fairly biased obviously.

While I'd love to, you and I have discussed the beauty of homeownership and the bills that follow.

Eventually, I am planning on a KL-DE or KL-ZE swap. I'll turbo that. 6 Cyl. Turbo FTW!

Well I figure instead of just saying "I hate the (insert sport compact)." Now you know why.

I still think the MS3 is probably the best sport compact to come out in a while. However, I hate... with a passion... sport wagons.
