I wouldn't say that applying online is a "complete" waste of time... I just found a job that I applied for online... start Aug 10thJust keep at it.
Also, I think that one thing that really got me over the hump was I redid my resume. Keep that as a consideration also.
are you just wanting to be service tech,customer service tech(desk help),or what exactly?i work in the IT field(CCIE,CEH,LPT,Linux,A+,and Net+ certified)and might be able to help you.if you're just wanting entry-level,then your best bet is to get an imternship somewhere.start from the ground and work your way up from that.i know of one company that pays their interns 15/hr.,but they want people who have some schooling,in school,or some certifications to show that they do know something to a degree.

I have A+, Net+, MCP XP, MCSA Server 2003.
If I can just get something Entry Level and sit on it for a year or two I'm golden.

I'm working on a CCNA. This should be fun.
I know nothing about linux, but can't wait to start learning it.
I plan on going for an associates degree, but probably won't be able to start until next year.
I'd do back flips for $15/hr

you've got an MCP and MCSA for sever 2003?wow,i'm impressed!!why tehn would you want to settle for an internship or somwthing on entry-level?you're already a step or so beyond entry-level.i'll talk to my CTO and see if he has or will have anything come available in the near futuer or if he can point you in the right direction to go and look.by the way.where did you get your certs. from and what school are you going to for your CCNA?if you're going Cisco,i wouldn't just settle for the CCNA or CCNP.you have to have a CCNA to get A CCNP or CCDP,then you have to decide what sector you want to go into wether it would be voice,security,r&s,etc.if i was you,i would pursue the CCIE.one,it covers the CCNA and CCNP without having to have either of those first.two,it is the highest paying position in the Cisco world outside of CEO and so on.three,there are only about 20,000 of us in the entire world so we are in HIGH demand.four,it is the only cert. out there where you can walk into any company and demand to be paid 165K a year or more.why?simple,without a CCIE on site and working for that company,Cisco will not allow them to sell,ship,distribute,install,or maintain anything that is Cisco.i'm not talking about your home Linksys routers,but the real deal $8,000-plus machines.the only downside to it is that the test cost $1400 to take,you have to pass with an 85% accuracy,and you can only take the test in the u.s. in san jose,ca.
My largest problem is I don't have job experience to put on my resume. Everything I've seen wants two years help desk or call center experience. I went to New Horizons. I can't recommend them. They work, but I was disappointed by the experience. I still haven't touched Active Directory in the real world. Though I have a thorough understand of it now.
This was my backup plan. I knew the economy was going south in 2007, now this has become my primary plan. I was in construction... yea, we all know how thats doing..
I also haven't seen Cisco. CCNA is beginner, and even it is difficult. CCIE? There is a reason you can walk into any company and demand $150K+/yearly. That is a very hard cert to get. The test itself cost like what $2K? And theres only a certain number of places you can take it. No, you have to be an expert for that. If I were to go that way, it would take years of studying.
I guess the important question is, if you think I'm above entry level, where should I be looking? Because I can't even get a response to help desk positions.
There was a job fair at Turner field today, I called to see if there was free parking as I'm that broke. They said they were turning people away soon because so many people showed up. It's an employers market.
if you're looking for help desk and you are A+ and Net+ certified,then i would pursue something like HP,Dell,or a satelite Microsoft office to give desk support.i know alot of college kids who when i was in college were doing that just to get on their resume that they have had a year or more of on the job skills.look for something like that.what part of georgia are you in or near so i can try and give you the names of some places to check out that are near you?
I'm in Marietta. Theres not to many IT jobs here, but theres a lot in Atlanta, a decent market in Alpharetta, and a few in Kennesaw. I'd rather be in Alpharetta, but I can't be picky right now.
alpharetta is where i work at myself!!there actually are a few places around marietta that are IT direct jobs.there's companies like SurrySystems or SurriSystems and Cisco themselves just right up the road off exit 6 on 400.
I went though teksystems to get my job. My company only hires contractors through staffing companies. So if they dont like them, they are easy to get rid of.
I wouldn't bother doing the level 1 stuff with those certs, you would just be waisting your time.

Experience is just a filter. Find a good staffing firm and get them to find you a job want. My first IT job was working 3rd shift in a NOC when I was 21. I had no certs and I was still in school. So it is possible. GL

I landed my job by basically selling the hell out of myself. I knew I could do the job/duties, but had to convey that to potential employers.
Yes, I would think so. I'm afraid theres just to many people competing for the same jobs. Most of my search has been online. I have made a friend with a recruiter that sends a few things my way no and then. But for the most part, I don't ever hear back from jobs I apply to online. Geek squad turned me down. I couldn't even get ahold of anyone from Target (night stock) or Microcenter.
There was a job in Forrest Park for Delta. Someone got the wages wrong, instead of $15/hr it was $10/hr. They were impressed, I was first to get an interview, that went great, then they decided it wasn't worth my time for me.
I got one from Plumchoice. Work at home telecommute help desk. Again someone messed up. They wanted three years experience and I couldn't sell it.
Have interview today, something IT/healthcare related.

I work at KSU as well, I haven't heard anything of a hiring freeze. There are several positions on the website that state, open until filled.

I dunno. I actually found it on craigslist. There weren't many being posted for my skill set. Just keep looking and keep improving yourself. It's about all you can do.

the problem w/ IT is certs/degrees are worthless unless you know what you are doing. you can't learn how to manage a network by passing an exam or reading a book.
i may be hiring someone soon but don't have too many details on it - it will be entry level dealing w/ day2day desktop support + possibly database work w/ SQL

There was no warning. They complained about me chewing gum.
I was working with someone yesterday. We were working together.
He got mad because I grabbed the mouse and made a few suggestions. So much for 'Team' mentality.
This guy just didn't have people skills.
Then he accused me of calling a computer 'Trash' in front of the user.
What I just realized is he did not work with me on that situation or with that person,
so there is no way that can be true.
The other guys I worked with were awesome, and I really liked the job.
Guy was a douche bag anyways.
I was on my toes and walking on eggshells not to fuck this up.
If I was a cute female with a nice rack, I'm sure I would have at least got a warning. I'd file a discrimination suit for spite.
It was just that this guy didn't like me, and he had been there longer. So he complained to the boss and I was on my way just like that.

I didn't really 'grab' I put my hand on it as we were 'working together' and he told me it was being used so I sat back down.
I have no idea if I did call the computer trash in front of the user. It is possible that my dumb ass did just that. However, he would not have known about it, because he was not there the day I was working on that. I would think the person I was working with would have said something. I know I said it to him, away from the users.
More than anything, I think he just didn't like working with me. The guy was stubborn and slow.
No need, you wouldn't believe some of the IT practices.
No room for backups. The person that worked there before me, mapped resources with the domain admin account. They are afraid to restart the servers. Granted, most if it was not their fault, just a problem they inherited, the situation was still a mess.
Oh, and the users computers, blowing up capacitors everywhere.

i'm glad i am finally w/ a company where i can be myself and speak my mind. i felt them out in my interview when i told the owner/gm that if i didn't agree with them on an issue specially pertaining to technology that i would gladly speak my mind. after that interview i was sold. i have a dream job now.
back in 07' i was working for a market research firm that was female ran and the op's manager thought she could run IT as well as the company... needless to say my mouth introduced me to the unemployment line as i was laid off. best thing to ever happen to me though. i was right about everything i said to the women they are no further ahead as when i was there explaining the company's short comings and now i'm far better off career wise.
i will say i work for a mans company... very little office drama/bs. it fucking rocks!
