Default VW Pickup (not US bound as of now)

Long absent from the pickup-truck market, Volkswagen is back -- but not in the U.S. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles released details of its pickup truck design study today ahead of the official unveiling at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show that begins later this week in Hanover, though there's no need to get your preorder in if you live on this side of the Atlantic. When it comes to market, won't be sold stateside.

The four-door, short-bed pickup is targeted at workers and commercial uses, not private buyers, and for now, is slated for sale only in South America, Africa, Australia, and Europe. Volkswagen claims it is the first pickup of its type to be mass-produced by a European automaker. Few details are known right now, but it will come with both gas and diesel engines. Inside, it has a touch-screen navigation system as well as a built-in compass and pitch indicator. For now, its name is simply "pickup," and it will enter production at Volkswagen's plant in Pacheco, Argentina, some time in 2009. Volkswagen is calling the truck a 1 ton, though by U.S. standards, it would more likely be considered a midsize.

The concept shown in the pictures is reminiscent of the Honda Ridgeline and Chevrolet Avalanche, though it appears slightly smaller than either of those two. The concept truck has been decked out as a search and rescue vehicle for lifeguards, complete with integrated tools and rescue equipment. Volkswagen has indicated that other markets will follow the first four, but that's as much as we know. If they do bring it to the U.S., would you buy it?
First shots were of the concept, now the spy photos...
