    The $17,500 video game

Would you pay $17,500 for this?

Think $60 video games are too expensive? You won't hear any argument from us, but you might from JJ Hendricks, a collector who just paid a clinically insane $17,500 for an obscure NES game from 1990.

The game in question is an ultra-rare, gold-colored version of Nintendo World Championships, a cartridge specially produced for use in a Nintendo-sponsored gaming contest. According to Wikipedia only 26 were created, and Hendricks calls it the "Holy Grail" of video game collectors.

The game itself has a time limit of just 6 minutes and 21 seconds and consists of three short segments from other NES games: Super Mario Bros., Tetris, and Rad Racer. Players are scored according to their performance in each game, and their scores are totaled once the time limit expires. Doesn't sound too riveting to us, but then somehow we doubt Hendricks is in it for the gameplay.

And while $17,500 might seem a bit much for a collection of ones and zeroes, Hendricks actually got a bargain: the game was originally listed on eBay for a cool $25,000.

Must be nice to have that kind of money to throw around for a 6 minute game.

I guess no one understands the history behind this game. This was the game used for the 1990 Nintendo World Championships. There are blue and gold cartridges. The blue are the ones that everyone got that competed and the golds are the ones handed out to the winners. Of course there were more made for management and to big wigs at Nintendo. This IS the most sought after Nintendo game. As far as video as a whole, its def in the top 5. I didnt think they were worth that much though. It must be a pristine cartridge with no scratches or anything.

The part that sucks is that the damn NES won't read the cartridge long enough to play the game LOL

I guess is some people are into that kind of thing. He probably will turn around, flip it, and get his money back plus make money. Or atleast thats what I'd hope he would do.

anybody remember the nintendo "power fest" that toured the country back in like 1993? It was a competition to get entrys to go to california for the mega competition. It came to rome back then.

No i mean the dang NES never read any cartridges right. I used to have to blow on my excite bike cartridge about 10 times before it would play.
