Default My consolidated R33 build thread

Well, figured I'd roll everything into 1 and post it all here,

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Start to Finish, Pics
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
In it's glory before it made it's way to my ownership

Just before it was brought down to me

    When I got it

Car was running like crap when I got it, off to the dyno

Turns out the motor was toast, had a miss and #5 piston and cylinder cracked not to long after. Time for new motor

New turbo kit for the new motor (ended up getting stolen at the shop)

New turbo to replace the stolen one

New motor is about ready to go

Went to pick up the car, ended up having a miss yet again on the new motor and the shop failed at life to find it ahead of time (7 months prior when the car was dropped off and new motor arrived). So back to square 1, need new motor.

New motor is ready to go in

    My helper

    Site support

    New motor in

Towed to National Speed in Wilmington, NC

Time for the tune, few quick oil changes to rid the rest of the fuel from the system

    New throttle cable bracket

The aftermath of debris from inside the engine/manifold that went into the turbo
If you look close you can see in the wastegate one of the turbo fins is stuck holding
    the wastegate open

    Log
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-April 20th 2009 | Troubleshooting fuel issues. Motor runs like crap after installing it, running way to rich above 10 on the wideband. Fuel leaking from exhaust flanges, engine oil beeing flooded with fuel. Removed injectors to inspect them, numerous o-rings were ripped and shredded, some of the black plastic near the nozzels were damaged and looked as if they were forced into the fuel rail. Power FC settings via Datalogit crosschecked to be set for the appropriate injector sizes, running at 50%. Small coolant leak on heater hose line near firewall (plastic connector). Suspect and was advised block needs flushed thoroughly to rid all rust and debri from inside that might be causing slight overheating when motor is running. No other leaks present/noticed.
-April 27th 2009 | Replaced fuel injector o-rings, still having fuel issues. Going to a new shop on May 1st to do some repair, tuning and dyno time.
-May 1st 2009 | Dropped off at National Speed for the remainder of the work and a tune.
-May 12th 2009 | After numerous oil changes and some magic liquid down the cylinders the car finally fired up on it's own, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7BEGsZkkUs
-May 13th 2009 | Time for the tune, few quick oil changes to rid the rest of the fuel from the system. After a several trial runs and getting a good start on low boost a exhaust leak sprung up.
-May 14th 2009 | Had a new throttle cable fabricated up to replace the ghetto ass one that was made by the previous shop.
-May 15th 2009 | Got the car on the lift and did a full walk around, come to find out some debris from inside the motor went through the exhaust manifold and into the turbo as well as the wastegate, causing the wastegate to get stuck open (exhaust leak) and bent almost all the fins on the brand new GT35R turbo :pitty: No fault on those guys at National Speed since I was the one who put this motor together and I'm sure it was something I may have overlooked. Sucks. Luckly they have a 35R in stock at their shop so I'm basically getting a new turbo and then back to the dyno once the motor is cleaned and ready to rock again.

Once I get this thing running with no issues it's going for some fresh paint all around

That was a long time ago, still got it sitting in the garage here in about 100 pieces stripped and parted out

Yeah pretty much seems that way. Funny thing was one of the previous owners I spoke to said he even replaced a motor so I'd wager this car has been through at least 5 motors in it's life, 3 with me.

I've been fixing things on the car ever since day 1, wheel studs where the first on the list, stripped and cross-threaded from previous owners.

Wow man. I hate to say it but sounds to me like your asshole is either bulletproof or the size of the Holland tunnel in NYC. I sure hope you didn't pay alot for that car. And who is the idiot shop that was doing your work? Stolen turbo, 7 months to find out the second engine is bad.....Wow. I salute you for staying wiht the project for that long. When it landed at my doorstep looking like it did, i'd have freaked.

Good luck on it man, cars shouldn't be that much trouble. Sounds like alot of just failure to check little things that keep causing it to mess out on ya.

You should take it to Lethal next time you need it worked on.

My brother Dave is a pro when it comes to RB25's.

    *points to his sig* hehe

They've got a silver R33 like yours that Kyle was welding a roll-cage into when I was just home on Leave a few weeks ago..

    :]

Props on continuing to go forward even when things kept getting worse & worse. And definitely seems like it has gone downhill since the 1st pic but at least the motor is/should be healthier now.
