depends on what is making the knocking sound. It could be as simple as bearings. Most knocks ive heard have been directly caused by something else though.. incorrect bearing clearance, low oil pressure (pump failure or low oil), overheating etc. how long has the engine been together?

u are going to have to replace the bearings. 99% of most knock i see are bearings. pull the crank and rods have a machine shop check it out. make sure there is no damage.

fyi once it happens nothing else matters. if there is no damage to the rods an crank u would have to plasti gauge and get the correct size bearings.

your gonna need rings, another head gasket, and then you need to take out your crank and inspect it and the rod bearings, then go to the machine shop and have them turn the crank if its damaged and get them to order you a set of main bearings/rod bearings it will probably run you about 500 or a little less you will also need a rehone possibly. You could leave the pistons/rods in the block and pull the crank out but i wouldnt really recommend it.

If he's thinking along the same lines as me, whenever you remove the head, you should replace the head gasket. Same deal for whenever you remove the pistons. It's not recommended to reuse these as they can be easily damaged/kinked upon removal.

+1. Half-ass the work and you'll always have problems.

first take the exhaust off along with the oil pan and the main stud girdle. then take one rod cap off at a time and check them. if its just a clearence problem plastigage and go up to the next size bearing. if its spun the bearing in the rod and scarred the crank then you will have to pull the motor and get a nother rod and polish crank or even weld it up an turn it back down if its run too long.in the worst case might as well rebuild all and see what caused it!

you cant tell that way even with a bad bearing it will be smashed out around the rod. you have to visually inspect for wear and flatening from too much clearance wich u will see as the bearing will be different colors in spots from different contact pressures.

you can also just get the oem bearings. check the block and the crank, they have codes on them to get you the correct color bearings.
