Default How old is your rig?

I mean your MAIN computer, not like a commodore stashed in a closet kept for boasting rights.
I ask this because I have a pretty obsolete desktop that I primarily use. Okay, it's not so old, but it has a single core AMD cpu.. an Athlon XP 3200+ annd it get boggy often. I've gotten IIRC 6 viruses on it in the past 2 years(recently got Antivirus 360...it was a bitch to get rid of that) and has a hard time encoding Youtube videos...on normal quality(the CPU always performs at 100%) I desperately need a new computer, but being broke sucks. I'm currently thinking of switching over to a macbook soon though through my school's discount program. So, where do I fit in among you guys?

Just sold a 2002 Dell. I didn't have it the entire time, but got it around 04 from a friend. One of my Toshiba laptops are about 4 years old. The other Toshiba laptop, Sony laptop, and HP Touch I have is under a 1 year each.

Mine is 1 year old, I got it around last new year from newegg. You should def. build your own or do some research and see if upgrading would benefit you. What do you use your computer for? If you don't need a new graphics card or memory- buying a new mobo/cpu won't be too expensive.

The thing is, I WOULD build my own computer if I had the money. I already have 3 builds I put together on newegg since December, but even with cheap, free shipped components, it costs around $4-500. I've upgraded my rig to it's limit, reached 2gb of ram, CPU was running HOT, so I had to get a brand new fan, upgraded the pos video card with a less crappier GeForce 6200(that tell's a lot about my computer lol)...running a VERY hot AMD Barton processor, 2gigs of generic ddr333 ram, and one of Nvidia's shittiest graphics units produced next to the FX series. Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I'm really leaning towards a Macbook if I do get some money

My advice, If you can slavage the case you can build a cheap computer for under 200 bucks. Frys almost always has some motherboard plus Cpu combo for under 150 bucks, Then ram is cheap as hell right now, Then all you need PSu which you can get one for under 50 bucks. But if your going to get a mac, That Edu discount saves you 100 to 200 bucks. Your better off going and getting a reburish macbook form apple with the same warrenty as a new macbook, It will save you a shit load more then that Edu discount.

Half of it about 3 years old, the processor about 3 months and vid card brand new. started having trouble on new games, so had to upgrade lol. Always used newegg, they got some of the best prices, esp on slightly older but not obsolete stuff (my processor was like $50 bucks, my vid card now cost more than my whole system lol)

about 4 months old. On average i keep a system 1-1.5 years before major upgrades. Its just the nerdy side of me that likes PC gaming.

I would consider upgrading. Although i cant recommend cheap parts, i could recommend some affordable ones.

ps. i have a complete system (minus case) sittin in a box. Its my 2007-2008 game rig. If your interested i would let it go for a couple hundred probably (have to check prices). PM me and i can shoot ya some specs if u want.

I use a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 that's around 4 years and four months and it runs almost perfect. I've upgraded to three gigs of RAM, I've thought about going up to seven, but it's not necessary. It ways a ton, it's liquid cooled and sounds like a jet when the fans kick on for a video.
I haven't even thought about upgrading, I figure $3k initial cost is a good investment for the years of perfect running under the G5's belt. It will still edit HD without too much of a problem too.
Also, my girl's running on 2.5 years on a sweet little 20" iMac.

My desktop is one that was built by a local computer shop 6 years ago. I've had to take it to them twice in that time to get it unfucked. but it still runs great. I don't have any kind of virus scanner on it..need to one one of these days.

I just upgraded mine before Xmas.

    Old:
    AMD Athlon 64 3600+
    1 GB PC3200 Ram
    ATI 2600XT HD Vid card
    ASUS mobo

    New:
    Intel Q6700 OC'd to 3.52 GHz
    4 GB RAM (OCZ-SLI)
    Geforce GTX 260 core216
    750i FTW SLI Mobo
(still running XP tho, hoping to upgrade to either vista or Windows 7 soon)

Still have old hard drive, optical drives and other accessorities... I love my CPU coolor for my 6700 tho... Thermaltake DuOrb (not the vga cooler) Keeps my temps down to low 50's under load air cooled.

    hella old pc here...lol

    Windows 2000
    P4 1.6
    512 ram
old school 32 meg vid card
    40 gig HD sata 7200rpm
    HP 9100 CD burner

very old technology....lol. New Quad core setup in the works for 2009. Can't complain though since i use Norton ghost to bail out of tricky lockups that i can't figure out. With ghost image i have a brand new pc install in 30 mins tops with all apps preinstalled and configured. Highly recommend to people who just want to keep running lean and mean all the time....and new pc basically. b/c it's not loaded with crap...over time.

up until mid last year I was using this box: (since '04)

Amd athlon 2500+ barton core (laptop processor) overclocked to 3800+ spec

1gb ram (which was A LOT when i got it, in 04, costed 269 for the ram alone)
ati radeon 9800xt 256mb (this card was BALLLLLER back in the day)
    etc etc

the only reason i stopped using it was bc the power supply went and i just started using my laptop more and more (core 2 duo t7500, 4gb, radeon hd 2600)

but if the power supply didn't go i'd still be using that system... it was nice... played battlefield 2 on pretty high settings.... awesome sound card... and 5.1 speakers... awesome music box... etc
