Default Install kit for a pioneer dual din?

I recently purchased a dual deck head unit and I was expecting it to come with the install shell so I could slide it in place and secure it. We'll after doing some research, pioneer expects you to install it using the OEM mounts. The problem is my car didn't come with any radio mounts (88 Honda CRX). So is there any place local where I could by a pioneer or universal shell so I can actually mount my head unit? Thanks for your time

Your best bet is to go to a local shop that sells Pioneer, go straight to the install bay and ask an installer if they will sell you one. Not all cars require the sleves and installers usually hold on to a few of each brand just in case. Ill also see if I have one in my personal stash.

I didn't think that a dual din ever came with a sleeve. The point being that the radio would fill the whole from the radio and pocket, then you just transfer over the mounts from the factory radio, like on a lot of Toyota cars. I just can't remember how a CRX's radio mounts, you can always fabricate something if an installer can't get what you need, be sure to support the weight of the back end with a plumbing strap, the double din units are kind of heavy and I've seen them bounce.

Pioneer makes a double din sleve, they ship it to retail stores for display mounts. I had one I got from circuitcity when they closed but can't seem to put my hands on it right now. Okra1981 is right, the factory mounts or a dashkit should have the mounts even if it is made for a single din, with a little modification it should work.

I didn't even know that those existed, shows how long it's been since I was an installer, good call Beetle, +1.

if you delete the pocket undet the radio and cut the 1" plastic thats seperates the pocket from the din radio and reconstruct it with some abs, fiberglass and bodyfiller you can get a double din in there just depends on if you wanna go threw the trouble and time just to have a double din.

I should of updated this thread

I was able to get a sleeve shortly after this post.

The USDM CRX only came with a single din slot, so I had to order a dual din piece from japan.

After making slight mods to the frame (the sleeve was slightly larger than the opening), I was able to install it without any problems.

Very clean install. I love the Avic F series. The are very hackable, due to the fact they run windows CE in the back ground. If you are computer savy check out Avic411.com. If not swing by Zen on the weekends and ill show you some of my mods.

    Thanks!

I checked out that forum once or twice since I had the unit. It does seem very "hackable" after looking at the forum. Once I get time, I may come and check you out homie!

After looking at them, i really like the Avic F series. Do they have a seperate hideaway module like the older Avic-N & D series did? Maybe i need to sell my double din kenwood LOL.

No, the F Series is all in one Double din unit, they also have a protable peice with a bttery pack. The other good thing about the F series is that the nav is flash based, now more scratched nav discs. Hit me up if you are really looking to upgrade.
