    Default Linux Ubuntu

    Hello everyone,

I've built a "mid grade" computer (intel dual core processor, 2 gig's of ram, nvidia 8500 GT w/256 meg's of ram, and 320 gig caviar, and 320 gig external my book.) I've been contemplating EXTREMELY hard about putting Ubuntu 7.10 on it because I cannot stand Vista. I just wanted to ask if anyone is currently using Ubuntu and how they feel about it? I also wanted to ask if anyone has tried using the Linux iTunes emulator for it? Also, I would LOVE to run WOW on it, any suggestions or experience on this? I've done some research but would like to know what everyone on IA thinks. Thanks a lot guys and gals!

I use a version of Ubuntu called Ultimate Edition. Basically this person did most of the work already and added a bunch of things that most people would add anyway as well as configuring Nvidia and ATI drivers and a few little tweaks here and there. Overall I like it, however a couple pieces of software I need for school keep me tied to Windows (they will not work with Wine or WinForLin).

ubuntu is nice. or hell, if you're feeling adventurous, you could even install os x since you have an intel CPU.

I got it on a folding rig. It's nice for day to day stuff but if you plan to game go with Windows.

I run Unbuntu and its great, its hard to go wrong with a Debian based distribution. OS X sounds neat but the driver support isnt great right now for non-apple hardware, and i don't ever build a system around what drivers an OS supports so for now no OS X for me. Although i have ran it successfully in vmware

Its tough to say if Vista will ever be good. XP wasn't as good as it is now when it first came out, but it wasn't a total piece like Vista.

My largest aggravation with Vista is the excessive use of resources for an environment that IMO isn't any more efficient than XP. When I purchased my last laptop (which isn't a slouch spec wise) i was astonished to find that Vista was absolutely unbearably slow. day 2 of ownership I partitioned and have been dual booting XP pro & ubuntu and haven't looked back.

I have AMD XP Pro on a desktop I use strictly for a server. I would like to venture away from M$cro$oft, strictly because Windows has been falling ever since 2000. XP is a nice OS, but Vista...come on??? Why on Earth is it necessary to create a "virtualstore" in each user name...UAC....? WTF were they thinking? All UAC proves is that if you dont pay good ol' Bill Gates enough money to be on his approved software list, he will make sure that everyone knows how "bad" your software is. Thanks for all the tips guys; I think its awesome that some of you run OS X on an intel machine...I'd like to try that one!
