This arguement could go on all day. I prefer 3 brands.... Alpine, Panasonic and Pioneer. Everyone has their own preference though. If you want to be able to fine tune your stereo... Use Pioneer. If you want high voltage preouts for amplifiers... Use Alpine and for just all around sound quality use Panasonic.

Eclipse HU's have higher outputs than just about anyone on the market. They can even go up as high as 16V BALANCED. That's huge.

    Just FYI.

ih ave had alpine, eclipse, pioneer, jvc, panasonic...pretty much all of them wheni was into car audio...alpine head units were always the best ones for me. easy to use, afforadble, great sound and managment...im an alpine guy. i have had probably close to 20 alpine head units and have no complaints about any of them. they all make good head units. the pioneers are very nice and you can do alot of tuning with pioneers...bu then again you can do it all with the other brands too. you just cant go buying the lower end headunits that these manufacturers make. spend the money to get a good unit and you will be happy with whatever you get. but my personal favorite is alpine

True but not everyone wants to pay the high price for Eclipse.

That is very true. I loved my 8053 that I just gave away. Cleanest HU I've ever had so far. I've had a ton of Pioneers, and that's what I went back with. I've also had Clarion and Alpine. I've liked them all, but the Eclipse was cleaner although only the RTA can REALLY tell when it comes down to it sometimes.

I had one Eclipse HU. It was their half motorized flip out dead head. I had to add a changer and dvd player but I believe it had 8volt pre outs? It was a very powerful head unit and gave my amps a much cleaner more powerful sound. Then it was stolen out of my car.

Yeah, that's how my 8053 was. 8V pre-outs, but I had the balanced driver module, so I was at 16V's....... Loved it. If it had satellite radio capability or GPS.....I'd never got rid of it. Now I have the Pioneer with all of it. It has way more bells and whistles, but I really liked my time delay and EQ on the 8053. Oh well, can't cry over spilled milk, right?

Eclipse is hands down the best of the mainstream head units.

    SQ: Nakamichi, or Denon

SPL: Dual or anything I cn find cheaper than that

Daily use: Eclipse or Kenwood Excelon.

Alot of the newer alpines actually have lower preout voltages then other radios at a comp. price. I hated my eclipse when I had it back in the day.

    BEST is a strong term...
I would have to know more info to give an honest educated answer. For example:
What is the best head unit under $200?
What is the best head unit that will match my VW dash lighting?
What is the best head unit that will allow me to use my MP3 player that is not an ipod?

The above questions will get you a much better answer.

    Redgst97....Agreed, hard to say.
I dont see a possible scenerio where a "Dual" brand would be the best at anything, unless "boat anchor less than 5 lbs" is a topic!
I vote for best (meaning legendary, most sought, and highest quality in its time) Alpine 7909.
Now, a lot of headunits are in staging lanes, and they are rarely stock in pro classes.
I have had 8-10 Eclipse H/U w/o a single problem, I love em. I also have currently a $125+/- Panasonic in my DD that does more than I need, and is easier to use, w/ high sq (for a non competition piece). I was very happily suprised. Thanks to Chris at Traffic Jams.

Are you saying that my old-skool Clarion DRX-9255 is not stock? Oh, wait. Maybe its not.
Nothing like taking a $1600 headunit, and shipping it off for $500 worth of modifications (2)....

DD audio ( the kevlar 3 componet set), with a 04 model premier 940 head unit, dd 6.5/4inch/silk dome tweeter. Run your rear speakers off of the head unit and get a really tight woofer i.e. 12 w6/w7 in a sealed box. Run a JL 5-channel, If you can find an Esoteric sudio amp for mids and Highs and run a JL 500/1. That same setup won hands down @the 04' isaca sq comp. The competition had over 15k just in product. Run JL TR series two ways in the rear.

anyways, I remember a couple of old (94ish) sony pieces that were very nice. Easy to use, looked good, expensive as hell though.

This thread has a lot of good opinions and info. But what it all comes down to is not what everyone else is saying....but what you like, and what is best to you.

I Love my Alpine...always have, always will. It is not what I have always used, but I have learned a few things over the years. I do know that I am not a fan of JVC or Sony. I did have a good experience with Eclipse, JL, and Kenwood.

I am most happy with my Alpine. Next car in July is an S2k, and I am putting all Alpine F#1 Status in it. That is the Top, TOP of the line ALpine offers (Not cheap either) So if you can afford that...get it.

    Later !!!
