Default Rock Band and GH3 Discussion Thread

Both of these games are coming out pretty soon, so I thought I'd set up a thread for it. I've played GH2 for a long while and I've finished everything on expert with the exception of Jordan, I'm pretty close to finishing it but not quite there. Anyway.

I got a chance to play Rock Band tonight, and I'll have another chance tomorrow. I'm not 100% sure if my facts are correct, but Harmonix developed the first two GH games and now they're collaborating with MTV to do Rock Band. If you're not familiar with it, it's a competitor to GH3 and features guitars, a drum setup, and a microphone. You can play with four people at once, and the idea is to work together.

The game looked pretty good, it was on a 360. The guitar controllers were heavier than the GH ones and looked much more realistic- the fret buttons were flush with the rest of the neck, which made keeping track of your fingers a bit tough. There was a second set of the same-colored fret buttons at the base of the neck, from what I understood you could use them for solos without needing to strum. I didn't try them out tonight. The general strum motion and button pressure was very similar to GH, so I was able to play pretty well.

The drum kit had four pads and a bass pedal, I expecting something tacky (like whatever those bongo things were for donkey kong) but it looked quite nice. It was also played fretbar-style on the screen; the four different note columns corresponded with the four drum pads from left to right. The microphone looked like a normal mic, and singing was graded on tone, pitch, and correct lyrics; the lyrics ran across the top of the screen from left to right. I'm not sure how you'd play and sing at the same time unless you had the lyrics memorized, but perhaps it's possible.

The biggest difference in the actual gameplay was the note indicators- instead of circles like GH, they were lines. It made them more difficult to time, but that could also be the fact that I was playing new songs. I also didn't really have any idea of how much star power I had or when to use it, but it's there.

I only went through three songs and only played the guitar (didn't want to look like a completely n00bsauce on the drums) but I liked what I saw. There were only 15 songs on the trial, I played Dani California by the RHCP, Vasoline by the STP, and Are You Gonna be my Girl by Jet. Apparently the released version will have 40 songs and they plan to have over 1000 available for download very soon.

I'm going to their display again tomorrow to play a little bit more, tell me if you have any questions and I'll ask them for you... I got a nice free shirt haha.

GH3 is coming out on the 28th I believe- I'll be buying this for my lowly PS2. I'm excited for it.

    If you play, discuss...

Here on campus. Harmonix is actually right up the street, many of their developers and software engineers are tied to the school so they like to test here.

I think Rock Band looks awesome, it just sucks how much money you'll have to invest to get the full enjoyment of it.

I don't have any of the game systems that will run any of the guitar hero games, but I do love playing them, and I'm pretty damn good (I can generally beat all of my friends that do own the game.) So I'm deifnitely looking forward to one of my friends buying it, I just don't want to have to.

I played a bit with my friends today at their stand... rocking 95%+ on expert on the songs I played. They have a stage setup and, since it's an MTV game, they videotape every performance and send it in for review. The two best 'bands' found on the east and west coasts play on TV, and the winner of that battle opens for a (real) band. We had stuff to do so we didn't play today, but we were invited to play the main stage.

The plan is to dress in the most ridiculous clothing possible and get really into it, even though we aren't very good. I still have a mullet (lost a bet earlier this week) so it should get interesting.

Me and roommate can't wait for a little GH3 action. The playlist was awesome on 2 and GH3's looks just as good; Stricken: Disturbed, Before I Forget:Slipknot, When You Were Young:The Killers, and not to mention Devil Went Down to Georgia:Charlie Daniels Band. I'm so excited. I wish they had more Lamb of God.
I don't know if we'll be able to afford Rock Band plus we need a lead singer, LOL. It sounds ever more fun, Black Hole Sun-Sound Garden is one of my all-time favorites. We'll see what happens.

I'm out to buy GH3 tomorrow... I have no idea if it's going to sell out or not.

In other news, I finally played on stage for Rock Band. I was doing it with some random guys from Minnesota... we were pretty terrible but, as predicted, MTV was way more interested in attitude than in talent. We actually failed our first song (when one person fails, it's almost impossible to save it) but they liked us so much they had us play again and recorded it. I played most of the song with the guitar behind my head haha, and my mullet was a big hit.

They gave me drum sticks and a card with our video code on it so I can watch it on the website in a couple days. I can't wait to see myself acting completely retarded.

    GUITAR HERO 3 is AMAZING.

Songs are great. Graphics are great.

And the hammer ons and pull offs are lot easier to do, which makes the game a lot more fun. it is a lot more forgiving when you make a mistake, and battle mode is so cool. the songs get an A+ and im only on the 4th set list.

    OK, MORE GH3 NOW!!!1

They posted the video. I'll throw it up for public ridicule because it'd be lame if I didn't. Bummer that my mullet isn't more apparent. I'm the one playing behind my head...

GTH3 is pretty fun. I've almost gotten everything unlocked except the co-op because my roommate has been at work. But I really like the wireless Kramer you get with it now.

I'm out to buy GH3 tomorrow and start working my way through it... I'm trying to be disciplined since I have a chem test tomorrow morning and I know that I'll fail if I play GH3. Sigh. I'm going to go ahead and get the new guitar and save myself money instead of buying the game, then inevitably another controller.

In the $2-3 range I think.

GH III is definitely the best yet.
GH II had an easily forgettable track list.
The third iteration of the series definitely rocks pretty hard, I like that they included some power metal/mathcore to add an extra challenge.

You'll be happy with Rock Band for sure man. Very fun game.

On another note- I bought GH3 with the new wireless guitar because I also wanted a second guitar. Is there a trick to getting the wireless guitar working? Shouldn't it just plug in and work? Mine doesn't, but before I exchange it I want to make sure there's not a procedure I'm missing.

I just started a career tonight over at a friends house. I got up to the Slash battle on expert, got beat a couple of times and decided to call it a night (my fingers were tired anyways ). Overall I definitely like it. I still can't decide how I feel about the set lists. I feel like, in general, a lot of the songs on GH2 were just more fun to play (at least after the additions for xbox360). But I guess I've only been through 5 of the set lists so maybe I'll like it more after I finish the game.

Oh and I tried Dragonforce on expert, holy ****!

I don't know man...I mean I'm not saying I don't like the setlist, I'm just not sure I like it as much. I also don't really like the fact that certain songs are only available in cooperative play. Also, what's up with "Slither" by Velvet Revolver being in the commercial, but not on the game (or at least that I see)?

Haha, I'm sure it will grow on me. Basically I just hope that eventually they combine all of the previous songs (from all of the titles) and put it on one game but with the good hammer-on pull-off system.

Haha, yeah that's what I'm hearing. I dunno, maybe I just like it because I've played it so much.

Hold the button that's on the receiver for your wireless Gibson. I didn't play the Velvet Revolver song once but I did unlock the songs from Co-op and all the ones you can buy already.

You can get Sabotage by the Beastie Boys, Helicopter by Bloc Party, Suck My Kiss by RHCP, Reptillia by the Strokes, and Monsters by Matchbook Romance.

Oh, and a Blue Oyster Cult song I don't remember.

    Bozzio for president.
