Default Get off the streets, and get on a track...

Well, as some of you may know, I just got back home from an Atlanta Regional SCCA AutoCross meet.

It was absolutely nuts. The people were great. The organization was awesome. The level of safety was very high. Hell...why don't more people get off the streets and get into this stuff?

Yeah, I know, drag is lame, drag is boring. I agree. That's why I don't do it. I was also into twisties on the backroads and stuff, or messing around with people on the street. But after today...WOW. Straight up...just...WOW. Paid 40$ (cuz I'm not an SCCA member) and got a whole lot of things that you don't get with street racing. Well, first off, you get ALOT less risk of getting busted. There was a cop or two AT the event, just watching. You got congratulations...EVEN if you didn't come in first, second, or third. You got congrats just for being new. You got times that you could compare against your previous, or future runs, and even against other opponents.

So seriously...street racing FTL. It's not worth it. QD was right. Why didn't I listen to him long ago? No...don't call me out as a "QD NUTSWINGER." Cuz I'm not. I talked to him about getting into racing, he helped me into the scene a little bit, and I do agree with many of his points, but this post isn't about him. It's about getting your asses off the street...quitting putting people's lives (other than your own) at risk, as well as your license and insurance, and get to the track! It's not that expensive, and it's fun as helll!

I hope some of ya'll follow my lead, or the lead of those before me.

Hope to see some of ya'll at the track. I KNOW I'll be back.

as tempted as I always had been to race on the road, I'll be honest and say I was more scared of wrecking and possibly killing someone, and thats what always kept me from not. I'll admit that if I'm on the road alone in the twisties I'll push the speed limit a little just for that extra fun, but SCCA and SEDA is where its at

    Returned for being like me...kinda.

Not gonna lie. We all have that little speed demon in us that tells us "Just a little more" every now and then. I give in, occasionally...i'm not angel, and I'm not perfect. But it's funny...as I've gotten old...I've learned that you really DON'T have to prove yourself to those "hardcore tight high-speed" people that like to rev, or pull up on you. Most of the time, I just give a waive, or I'll gun it and pull a foot ahead, and then just let off and giggle to myself. Cuz at that point, they think that you DID race them, and they won. Then they leave you alone.

Haven't gotten into SEDA, yet. SCCA is where I've been lingering and watching. I'll be back...

well, I've never actually drag raced, I'm just talking about little curvy roads going home alone, its like OMGWEE!!!

But I've learnt to slow down as well, I had this habit of always passing people, on the left or right. I guess to a point I have a superiority complex or something? Anyways, one day I just took a back stance view of everything and all that effort in passing that one vehicle, I'm at a red light and its maybe 2 cars behind me. All that work for nothing, so I've just cruised now ( unless your doing 60 in the far left lane on 85 )

    EvasiveEF9, you're a QD NUTSWINGER.

    j/k

BTW - you do realize that running through cones in a parking lot is not "racing at the track", right?

Actually, no, they are not. Big difference. Get on a track with other cars and you will find out really quick.

Racing against others is very different that racing against a clock, or doing a non-competitive trackday.

Unfortunately, it is also a LOT more expensive to get on a track. Auto-X is much more affordable to start with.

Yeah, no doubt...if I'm on the interstate, it's cuz I wanna get somewhere...so I DO cruise there. Just not get stupid. The main way I save time is by not stopping for jack shit unless I'm running on fumes... My "back-stance" view was when I looked at my insurance rates...

    ...asshat.

Yes, I do realize it's not a "track" but it is a "course" which is closely related. And in my post, I meant to put more along the lines of just "get off the streets and get into legal racing" but that was too long.

SCCA is just a title. Legal racing is legal racing. Just like whether an inch or a mile, winning's winning.........LoLoL I can't even say that with a straight face...

40$/event is FAR cheaper than worrying if there's blues behind you, plus insurance inflation, plus points, plus driving course, plus possible jail time, possible revocation, and 120-300$ (give or take a couple hundre) dollar fine...

Check soloatlanta.com and click "schedules" on the left hand side.

Any questions? Doesn't matter how fast or slow you are. No one cares. Just that you're out there to have fun. It's more a comp against yourself, than anything else. Run what you brung, and just have a damn good time. Seriously. I knew about this stuff like 2-3 years ago, but never did it cuz Id idn't think my car was "ready". But hell...the kid I ran into today and hung with for most of it had pretty much a bone-stock crx...and the kid had a DAMN good time doin' it.

Yes, helmet is required. You can bring your own (full face, or 3/4 were the most popular) and the next one I'll be at for autocross is 07JUL2007. Soo...just remember 070707. There's others between then and now, but I don't know yet that I'll be at them.

Go to soloatlanta.com and click on "schedules" on the left-hand side. Those are all the scca ones.

There's a few other reqions and stuff, but I can't find all the links, right now. Keep in touch and I'll get 'em for ya.

It's a blast. Hope to see you out there.

Inspection = basically, anything loose or unsafe. Just take anything out that isn't bolted down, and check the engine bay to make sure nothing is loose...

I borrowed helmets at the race. Comfortable...just...used...

Just come out with me, sometime. We can lay Julie on the track.

Agreed, but both are still pretty competitive and on a designated...area? Hard to say...can't think of the word, but yeah. There's a difference, but it's still along the same lines.

hey man, glad to hear u had a good time. im gonna try to be at the next one. have u figured out what class u want to run in yet? as u can see in my sig, i replaced the jetta with something a little more appropriate for autox . i havent gotten used to driving the miata at its limits yet, im gonna try to get as much experience as i can this year and depending on my financial situation next year maybe buy some race rubber and try to be competitive in c-stock.

I'll probably run EP class with the crx. The Civic I've been told with all it's work would be in street modified. Don't really care what class the civic is in. The rex...I think EP would be good for it. We'll see in time. For now I'm riding novice class to get some time in and just get some practice.

    You can always try...

See, here's my theory. Ricers are the main street racers. They just jump on any bandwagon they can. Rims, NOS, turbos, wings...whatever it is, they'll do it. If they see alot of people getting into it, maybe they will, too. And hopefully they'll soon realize what the car scene is REALLY about.

...wow...that theory's not bad for coming up with it in about 30seconds just to have some kind of reply to you...

True, but the thing with these "new" ricers is... this... they see something "cool" or something they wanna do so bad, but they can't.
so what do they do... get back to what they know how and like to do.. street race. i understand that its the ricers that are fucking it up for the TRUE car people... just the other night four faggots were racing on 85 and stop'd a shit load of traffic, not that was fucking stupid and retared.. this was around 11pm(still decent traffic)... so i got pissed cause i had to get somewhere quick and here are acouple faggots racing 130whp cars. wtf? after that they tried me, and i did a very smart thing... passed them in 5th and put my blinkers on. lol! they got pissed!!!!

    But yeah, nice thread queer.

I'm pretty sure I saw your hatch out there man! I know how fun AutoX can be

Really? It's the one where the doors and Z3 fenders are two-tone primer (I hate those damn Z3's...) black hood, and the roof and 2 1/4's are almost urban camo looking... Bronze 15's, 2nd heat novice number 7...

I love autocross. I used to do it with the Mk2 I had a while back but doing the VW three wheel turns isn't so fun.
