    Default designer help

I know there are a few graphic designers on this board, do any of you know how to make images like ones below? Or maybe if this imagery has a type or style name so that I can look it up? Ive see a lot of different designers make images that look similar to this and I have always wanted to learn.

i've looked into/tried doing stuff like that but it's pretty complex. a lot of people use 3d programs for part of it and then just crazy amounts of layers and stuff like that in photoshop. the stuff i've tried hasn't been nearly as elaborate or good looking, but was still amusing to try (i pretty much just found some kind of base image and then put tons of layers on top of it with all kinds of shapes and a little text). my friend andy sapp is quite good at stuff like that though and posts a bit of his work up on our board (driftmechaniks.com) so you might could hit him up for advice over there.
oh, and i've heard a few different names for this style and don't really know what it's officially called, but here are a few more links to check out if you'd like:

(if you check out that last link, you can actually get a really nice printed catalog of images like this for free as it's part of an image library they want you to buy for like $400)

thanks for the info and links. Yeah I know a lot of them use renders from 3d programs, I just suck at them. I've tried learning 3DSmax, lightwave, maya, and rhino....I just suck, I really cant' make anything, I need to take a class or something so I can learn one of those programs.
