    Default Plastic behind door panels?

What is the purpose of the plastic sheet held on by silicon behind the door panels? Can I remove that plastic sheet, or is it necessary?

It was already ripped on my passenger side, so I tore it off. But I guess I'll leave it alone on the driver's side. Thanks for the inputs.
