That there is a car Porsche used to win Le Mans by "interpreting" regulations to a new extreme.

The 956 started life in 1982 for the new FIA Group C sports car racing formula.

By 1985, a newer, safer version of the car was developed. The 962.

Dauer was an Austrian business man that converted race 962s into street cars.

In 1994, when the ACO banned Group C cars from Le Mans, Porsche realized that a street 962 from Dauer could be fit to qualify under ACO new GT1 regs.

Therefore, it could use a 120L fuel tank compared to the 80L in the prototypes. So even though it was slower, it was longer running.

This meant that a race car, that was turned into a street car, was turned back into a race car.

And banned right after the Le Mans victory.

1988 was a great year. One of the greatest ever actually.

Yan Lammers Jaguar's gearbox fell apart as soon as the team opened up the casing. They beat the final factory supported 962 that year and that ended Porsche's 7 year freight train at Le Sarthe.

    From QV500...

Another unique feature is a special transmission that combines the normal 962 gearbox and clutch with Tiptronic S-style buttons on the steering wheel.

    This was the early 90's.

Diablos could be had with purple and green leather.

Good question. I did some searching and just saw "Attached to the engine is a unique transmission that uses the normal 962 manual box and clutch. But instead of using a gear lever, the driver select ratios via the Tiptronic S style knobs on the steering wheel."

It soudns like it would have some early form of PDK but I dont know though.

The 956/962 were the first Porsches to use a PDK system in the 80's.

The first victory was Monza 1000K in 1986.

Ah ok. IT does look like a sequential shifter though - no lateral axis to move about.

Kinda like this sample sequential shifter:

lolol that is awesome. "The main competition would come from the Group C class as Dauer's cars were 15-seconds a lap quicker than their nearest GT1 rivals."

lol yeah, considering there were only a small handful ever built at over $1 million each nearly 20 years ago...and the Sultan of Brunei bought most of them.

The Dauer is one of 4 street versions that i know of. In terms of race version, there are close to ten different varients from outside brands.

    DP 962

Koenig C62 (No, not the wheel company)

Schuppan 962CR (Made by Vern Schuppan to honor his 1983 Le Mans victory.)

    Um, ok.

I guess the other bit of interesting info was the fact the 1994 LeMans was to be a one two finish for the Dauer Porsche if it weren't for Eddie Irvine's astonishing final laps in the Toyota to chase down Thierry Boutsen (Shell Oil car) on the second to last lap. This coming after Irvine was leading in the Toyota into the final hour only to have the shift linkage disengage and have his stop and fix it past the pits.

    http://www.racingsportscars.com/phot...l?sort=Results

This was the final victory for a 962 at Le Mans. A victory spread of 13 years. Longer than any other race car ever.

I looked through my library and found some pics.
