How is a stolen engine legit in any capacity though? The detective had the name of the owner of the stolen Si. How do you unsteal an engine? I'm being serious. Are you telling me that he is now offering the insurance company of the stolen Si salvage pricing for the engine swap? If so I wasn't aware that this was possible, but if it is then kudos to him.

I said I bought the replacement transmission from then Baranco (now Sons) Acura after I'd destroyed/rebuilt mine 3-4 times. No. I said I said I bought the replacement transmission from then Baranco

contacted the insurance company and they tell you how much they wanted for the motor and transmission that was in the vehicle.Then you pay the balance and they send you a crisp letter saying your balance has been paid and they give you the bill of sale with the vins of the motor and tranny with the amount paid for the items.

i Have a rebuilders licence i do a lot of business with insurance companys. I have never heard anything like this! Plus that motor and trans still has a altered vin! Its the samething as buying a pistol with the numbers scratched off duh they only do that for one reason!

i think his jus disapointed tom,theyhought they could trust you tom, i remembered sum of them saying all the alignments and car talks they had wit you, why didnt you jus cum up to him and say hey i think thats my buddys hood its not lik you didnt know him what would he have done, he couldnt argue when you'll would've showed the ssn carved in it and only the hood was his,not the swap so why go try and get more punishmen for the young man, your alot older tom im pretty sure you made sum poor choices to in your day, but all the ia viewers didnt see it like they did this, and far as the volks go i doubt yours friend thought or cared they where stolen they had all four of them out of my friends truck and in you shop, and you guys hadready payed him, you'll where gettin ready to mount them as we where still out side talkin and noticed how narrow they where, then he came to us and explained and like gentlemen we refunded his money

so whats the ramaining balance on a car they probably payed out upwards of 7k for and i have seen theft recovery si shells at the insurance auctions and know what they go for.

ok i can vouch for the part where they aint have no one to remove it that they will have to wait because my cuzin was in the same shoes as your friend but the motor had vin tags and my cuzin got a bill of sale and and the sellers car tag and drivers licence number so he was at a car meet in florida where this happened and the cops pulled him over and poped the hood and ran the motor vin it came up stolen they held the car for one year and then the court ruled since he had all the info on the person who sold it to him that he had 10 days to remove the motor and return it to the state

yep they gave the car back jus like it was except for the hood which tom and his boys took, the motor jus had alot of water in it, we had to get it out ourselves, usually we would have taken it to honda acura but we did,nt want type R TOM to jack us up again

well the hood was removed at the shop of course and given back to the owner.And the motor and tranny was in the car at the impound.The insurance company didnt know how to get a motor removed from the car I guess.So they told him either pay the remaining balance or wait until we find someone to remove the motor.Once the owner of the car talked to the insurance company the insurance company contacted the dectective.And explained the arrangement with the person, then the detective called him once he was contacted by the insurance company.And told him he could pay the towing fees and impound fees on the way.To the impound lot once the detective established he had paid the towing fees and cleared with with the wrecking company.He escorted him to the impound lot where the car was and released the car to him.Well after he had explained they had lost the key to the vehicle first.I swear Clayton COunty is a trip.

the price he paid the person he got the motor from was considered by the insurance company and they made him pay the remaining balance after they looked up the price swaps were going for.

If "trusting me" includes looking the other way from an obviously stolen engine/trans swap while checking a stolen hood's identifying marks, then no I'm not trustworthy in that respect. If trust is doing the best possible job in a professional manner when ever you guys had alignments, or anything else done, then yes I've always been trustworthy.

Put yourself in my tech's shoes man.

His ENTIRE CAR was stolen from his driveway on week night. Luckily he had a kill switch so the thief couldn't drive the car away from the spot they'd pushed it to at he end of the street. They stole his ECU by cutting 26 wires, they stole his hood, his AFC, etc. It was a wiring nightmare.

Then not only does your friend show up with his hood, which is one thing, but then the missing VIN B16A2 pretty much could not have made him look any worse. Why would we even bother asking for an explanation? We had discussed asking him for the hood back prior to popping the hood to check the ID marks, but then there was also a stolen engine with missing VIN plates.

For all we knew the argument could have been made that the ID marks were a completely different meaning other than my tech's initials and last 4 of his SSN. Hell even WITH that info the cops were reluctant to give him his hood back.

It wasn't about punishing your friend as much as it was following protocol for getting his stolen hood back. Had we simply removed it without calling the cops WE could have been charged with theft. Again anything could have been made to fit those ID marks that were on the hood hinge area.

I will apologize for the "shady crew" remarks, but again put yourself in our shoes. You're rolling with a guy with stolen shit - period.

We also never got a "I'm sorry man I didn't know it was stolen" or anything from any of you guys. It looked really bad on you guys.

Okay so your friend made some mistakes, and yes we all make them, but had he not gotten caught he'd still be rolling with someone else's stolen property, and you all would likely keep buying hsit with missing VINs, right?

Sucks that it all went down this way, but it did.

My friend is actually the one who brought the stolen point up after he'd looked online at how much Volks were going for earlier in the day. I'll be glad to call him and ask him if he actually payed amd money exchanged hands, but I honestly do not remember that. I apologize if I'm way off base here, but again the circumstances lend itself to look bad for you guys.

This is exactly why I try to avoid going ANYWHERE near Clayton County.

And Chris, I am sorry to hear about your loss man. I know its been a while, but that shit sucks and thieves are the biggest pieces of shit to walk the earth. That is why half the time, unless Im selling my car on here, only a select few IA members have any idea what I drive. I dont trust half the people on this site. Ive said it once and Ill say it again, I can almost guarantee you that 99% of stolen members cars are from other members/lurkers of this site.

Wow, this is a VERY interesting thread! Not taking sides since I don't know either one of y'all, but b18c5-eh3 has some very good information. Southside - if your friends buy swaps without VIN plates, tell them thats not smart at all. And I've seen a few other threads saying you're a thief (southside). I'm not saying you are, but many did/are.

Yes the guy Blake said that Turtlesquad stole his car LMAO because he had went to one of my friends house that ran his shop out of his backyard kinda like Voungs Garage.And he seen all the parts and stuff and guess he figured it was a chop shop.But when I contacted the guy Blake Via pm he said he also knew alot of people that stole stuff.When I mean know I dont mean personal friends but like when someone tells you oh watch out for that guy he steals shit.And he said turtlesquad took his shit and all this and that when his Si was stolen from the movie theater.Then later on someone told me that the guy knew who stole his car but he was scared to confront them and dropped the subject and that is when my friend that had his shop in his backyard got pissed because the guy was saying he had a chop shop or some shit and he knew that we had something to do with it.LMAO when people shit gets stolen everyone becomes a suspect and the blame game gets played.Trust me I know but just because someone says something doesnt make it true.Kinda like if I say you suck dick is it true?MAYBE Maybe not but who knows but if someone makes that accusation then of course they are going to think you have sufficient evidence to go along with you saying Im positive they have something to do with my car coming up missing.:goodjob:

That last response was absolutely civil, and I can appreciate that.

You'll have to forgive me as I'm "out of the loop" and I have never really been big into buying swaps and parts from local people. I've always done business with Import Auto Salvage in N.C, Pacific Engine Co. back in the day, and J.E.I locally. I've never understood it to be "normal" to buy VIN-removed swaps, so when I see stuff like that it immediately makes me think "thief." Seeing my friend's/co-worker's hood at the same time also makes me think "thief." I think we've well covered this, but I feel almost like I have to defend myself for calling the cops which was the only right way to get that hood back.

You might also notice I've yet to post that topic naming the name too. Maybe dropping hints here and there was the best thing so that we could have this discussion since nobody from your camp ever stopped back by my shop to explain anything. Check my posting history here on IA and you'll see I'm very rarely/never on here. I saw your topic about engine bays and I dropped a hint because I thought it was ironic that you were asking to see engine bays, and your friend had a stolen swap.

I've had shit stolen too. It sucks. I think anyone who has experiences that sort of violation looks for ways to get back at thieves. I'm not trying to sound like an ass but myself and the guy whose hood was stolen don't follow some sort of "code" when it comes to "the scene." Where I'm at in life is calling the police when shit like that goes down. This was also at a place of business, with a business owner's interests in mind. She was definately not trying to play the "just ask for the hood back" game. It was "if you don't call the police I will" and that was that.

The stolen engine swap really cinched the whole calling the cops thing. I've got a friend who has had two cars stolen from him, and one was a 99-00 Civic Si - it could have been his engine.

Hindsight is always 20/20, meaning perhaps we could always have done something different. If your friend really had no clue a VIN-less swap wa shady then that sucks. He certainly knows now. I guess if everything gets dropped, he keeps the engine and it's somehow "legitimized" and he gets off with a slap on the wrist then that's as close to "justice" for all parties involved.

I cannot say I'd do the calling the cops thing differently though given the exact same circumstances. when the cops start saying shit like "yeah well his cell phone from the car has a lot of parts exchanging activity" it made me think that we had stumbled upon a full blown theft ring. What else was I to think? I can't give a guy with a stolen engine swap the benefit of the doubt given those circumstances.

How would you have handled that situation being in my position? Don't forget that I had a fuming pissed co-worker and the owner of the shop to answer to as well.

Just curious if you guys ever tracked down the guy(s) that sold the swap and the hood to your friend. See if I were you guys I'd be more pissed off at them than anyone. Surely you had the seller's phone number or something, or else how did you set up the deals?

And finally:

Since what's done is done what resolution do you think is best RIGHT NOW?

Meaning your friend can't unbuy stolen goods, and I can't uncall the cops.

I don't expect you guys to show up at the shop with a fruit basket or anything, just like you can't expect my co worker and I to apologize for calling the police.

And Chris, I am sorry to hear about your loss man. I know its been a while, but that shit sucks and thieves are the biggest pieces of shit to walk the earth. That is why half the time, unless Im selling my car on here, only a select few IA members have any idea what I drive. I dont trust half the people on this site.
