The pen tool will be your best friend for that, but it does take a bit of practice

You can choose just about any color you like. All I did was start with the psd file that you started, cleaned up the edges a bit, and then used the pen tool to select the silver areas and just used the selective color feature to adjust the color to appear more red. You can adjust the sliders to achieve just about any color that you would like. Also keep in mind, this is just a simple method of changing colors. There are many other ways to achieve the same goal. Some are more advanced, but produce better results. The best way to learn ps is to search for some free tutorials out there. There are a ton and now that you have the product in front of you, practice your way through the tut and you will be amazed at the results.
