ok i just bought a sigma 70-200 2.8 and returned it 2 days later. it was not sharp at any focal range. i understand have shutter shake hand held with no VR but when the picture is not sharp at a shtter speed of 4000 and shutter shake is out of question then something is wrong.

It sounds like your copy might have had a problem with back-focusing or front focusing (fairly common with the Sigmas). My Sigma isn't perfect, but I haven't noticed any front focus or back focus issues (not yet, anyway). Also, I take pictures with a Rebel XSi so I am used to having to fight with the AF system to get sharp pictures anyway.

Where did you get your Sigma and what did you pay for it?

The IQ of the Tamron 70-200 is better than the Sigma. But the AF is also slower. The only way to get the best of both worlds is to go Nikon so you'll have great quality, fast AF, and VR.
