    Default Art project

So basically we are just supposed to fill pages with lots of lines/shapes that was our task, tomorrow we are cutting them up to make a full composition. Just bored and figured I would share for some comments/criticism. None of them are complete yet but so far the third is my favorite...

Looks like a 2D design project to me. I like it overall... try playing around with value, like making your line patterns denser/less dense to convey shadowing and stuff.. it's really fun.

Here's what I'm talking about... this is the 2D line project I did at SCAD a few years ago.

I loved that project.. so much fun. Keep up the cool stuff!

Fuck stance. Stance is for kids in skinny jeans with Justin Beiber haircuts. You don't need stance when you got swagger.

I was hoping you'd chime in. I know i need to do more with the values but i'm pretty terrible at shading. This is my first art class (yes, it's 2d design) any tips on how to make it work?

lol of course I chime in... I'm the resident art nerd/snob.

As far as shading goes, the best way is to try making a block gradient scale with each line type... first do just solid blocks, so you get this..

Then try to duplicate the scale using different line types. The bottom is almost always gonna be black and the top will pretty much be white.. but if you're using a scribble/squiggle line, for example (like the thing in the middle of my piece that looks like a big "6" is made of), then mess with the densities of the scribbles... the more ink you put on (IE the longer you scribble on a square), the darker it will get. So scribble on each square less and less until you come up with a gradiated scale like the one above.

As far as actually putting it into play and using it to make a big impact on things, study the way shadows fall on objects... like on mine, I wanted the elements to look rounded, so I decided where my light source would be (upper right hand corner-ish), and then gave everything a slight shadow at the bottom so that they would have the appearance of depth. I also gave them some rounding aspects so they would have more shape than a flat appearance. Originally the big white strip in the background (that looks like a music staff or column or something) was blank, but in one of my crits my teacher said it needed some depth, and that I should think of a way to make it look like a cylinder instead of a stripe. I didn't want to detract from the intricacy of the designs already present, so I did the super thin lines that collected at the top and bottom, giving it a "round" appearance.

Also, if your assignment is to create an 11x14 piece, for example, get like a 14x17 piece of paper and mask off an 11x14 area... On yours, when you got close to the edge of the paper, the designs stopped, which makes it look very contained to the space it's in. On mine, I masked it off, which gives a clean edge.

Also, try to convey a feeling of motion and balance... like on mine I put the heavy aspects at the bottom and then it seems to kind of sweep up and to the right, and it looks like the elements of it are actually moving around. That sense of movement are what makes pieces interesting to look at and keep the attention of the viewer. So even when you go nuts like a squirrel and just have a bunch of shapes like yours are, try to do like one shape moving throughout the whole bunch, or do some bigger ones at the bottom and have them float up to the top, or big ones at the top falling to the bottom.. something to make it interesting and have a cohesive feel (Gestalt) instead of just being a bunch of shapes on paper.

You'll get a lot better.. 2D design can be a difficult class to wrap your head around, because it depends less on the skill of the artist and more on the technical comprehension of the basic ideas of composing a piece of artwork. 99% of your work will be in black and white, and you'll be asked to do things you never did before, like making patterns and whatnot.. but once you get the swing of it it's a really fun class. Feel free to PM me or IM me if you need some help.

We're are cutting all of ours into 2" squares and gluing them on a 20"x20" matboard. So that's kinda why I just went to the edge. These were supposed to be completely random, and we are suppose to rearrange them to form true composition on the matboard

    Thanks for the tips

I recommend using Pro-Black, you have to use a brush but the results are worth it
