Looks like the head is the wrong shape to be a copperhead. They have very diamond-shaped heads. Could be a milk snake or corn snake. Most likely just a little water snake though.

Water Moccassins are black and really fat. I think they look kinda like Copperheads when they're really young but that snake looks to big to be that young.

according to the carolina guides this is what a water moccasin looks like, but it refers to it as a moccasin, its actually a cottonmouth....i have no idea, but i can tell you that even if he wasnt venemous i was still scared a little, there was an idiot swimming in the standing pool at the bottom of highfalls, less than 20 ft away from the snake and never knew it...snakes are easily the only thing i have come across that creeps me out, heights dont bother me, weather, or any other species, theres just something about snakes

edit, for some reason the pic wont come up....even though its tagged correctly, but it is dark and fat as described before

Are mocassins venomous? Can't stand snakes myself but from experience they do not want to be around people, so if you watch your surroundings and make noise when you're suspicious they will not bother you. I've been watching too much man vs wild.

And william_jeff where can I see the rest of the pics from your sig? Thanks!

Snakes are really not something that bother me. If i see a snake in the yard and know its not poisonois i will go pick it up and show it to people. I kinda lost scare factpr in them after i went to a pet store and asked to hold one of their ball pythons. Snakes dont usually harm anyone unless they are scared out there mind. Most try to run from you and will onluy bite you if they think they have to (being stuck in a corner, or being chased with a shovel or something.) They may bite when you feed them but that is them mistaking the hand/objects or food. The only ones that may attack a human out of random is something like an anaconda that is big enough to take down a rhino. But honestly go to a pet store and just tell whoever is there you want them to put a snake in your had and after you do that snakes are just like W/E. They really arnt that bad.
