Apparently you've read the wrong information about Islam. All religions basically have the same teachings, respect and love your fellow man, live life clean, and love your "god" whomever that may be. THe Crusades are a good example of Christians killing people who did not want to convert to Christianity.

the bad people of religions are EXTREMISTS. Hindu Extremist killed Gandhi. Muslim Extremists London and NYC. Christian Extremists The Crusades. Just about all religions and/or teachings have extreme parties that do not follow the traditional teachings and that is what gets noticed.
