    Default Surgery... Check This Out!

I work at Egleston Children's Hospital and I work in the operating room pharmacy at least once a week. Yesterday there was a surgery that they say you will only see once in a lifetime. So I went and watched part of the surgery. It is called a Van Ness Rotationplasty. Basically, the kid's ankle will become his knee joint! Check out both of the links below... I think you'll find this interesting!

Gross! I would kick people in the crotch standing behind me all the time.

Honestly I would rather have them amputate that than put it on backwards.

[This is Kate; I didn't realize that Paul is signed on and not me]

The reason that they do that is so the kid/person can run. You know, if the leg is amputated above the knee, they will have a limp and a prosthetic knee which is harder to function. However, this way, there is a joint there that moves and so it allows the kid to be more normal as far as movement. I asked myself what I would do and I say I would do it. Plus, you could really freak out your friends... and like 1439/3000 said, I could kick those guys in the crotch who rape me with their eyes from behind me

I used to follow cases from the ER to the OR, but trauma is another matter. It's amazing what a skilled surgeon can do. Imagine being the first patient to undergo that operation, trying to understand what they are going to do, and being cool w/ it never having been done before.
