TKD... karate... ninjitsu... kungfu...hapkido.... save it for the movies....
judo, brazilian JJ, vale tudo = functional in the fight world.
also... the term "black belt" is thrown around a lot.... being a black belt.. or any belt.. doesnt mean anything without the right credentials... it's the instructor who issues the belt ranking..... depending apon....1 your age... 2 where you train.... your belt ranking doesnt carry much value....
it should take the avg person 10 years to get a black belt in brazillian JJ... so anytime you see someone in their teens.. early 20s.. claim to be one... i wouldnt put much wieght on it.... Chuck Liddell is only a brown belt in JJ... for comparison to your "black belts"
do you have this one in your maro crafty???
The only thing I agree with is some people use the term Black belt way to loosely....When I was in classes for TKD I was trained by a Korean Teacher...who himself, was still learning....I think he was only 5th degree black belt...Can remember...its been 10 years....Originally Posted by WickedOne

by choice.... chuck has studied brazilian JJ for quite a few years.... you're not a brown belt in JJ if you cant fight on the ground. Chuck is a registered brown belt in JJ.... i'm not saying he's Antonio Nogueira or anything...Originally Posted by StarOfOrion

TKD / Karate... ect fighters refused to do sport fighting vs other arts in the early days... because if anyone seen them get owned by muy thai and JJ fighters... who would actually pay to take TKD????...Originally Posted by wantboost
TKD / most all forms of Karate / Hapkido... and all the other "graceful" martial arts... are best left to children... it's better than nothing... and i wouldnt knock anyone for taking it.. atleast you're excersizing...
but bottom line is.... your art is inferior to just about every other fighting style you could possibly participate in....:idb:

If he is your instructor he 1) either holds multiple blacks, or is a master (more likely). While I do not scare easily, that's like me telling you to line up with John Force's daily driver/weekend racer. But at any rate, I would like to train/spar with any experienced fighter. Not calling any1 out, but it would definitely take some1 sharper than me to keep me sharp, and I welcome that.Originally Posted by WickedOne

Furthermore, I PERSONALLY know local TKD (only) masters who will command your respect for the discipline.
True, but this is still "organized", so 'fight-world' is a relative term. I lean towards agreeing w/ your line of thinking here though.Originally Posted by WickedOne
True. The IBBOs International Black Belt registry is not perfect, but rest assured you're not just gonna whoop up on any1 listed (including myself... had to pat myself on the back... LOL) w/out earning it. It'd be safer to err on the side of caution when facing any1 who holds a black. It took just under 11 years for me to get my black in JKD, and that's the average. Karate belts are more common, and "mean" less on the circuits and on the streets, but even still these guys have taken a lot of blows to get there.Originally Posted by WickedOne
Very well said. It's a journey, not a "destination". Outside of Bruce Lee no1 has really ever "arrived" yet... and even he was still a student at the time of his death.Originally Posted by babygurl

well... anyone who trains any martial art should be "good" at fighting... but what i'm saying... when "dissing" kung fu, karate ect... is that those arts alone... unless you're bruce lee... are not very functional in todays MMA... and even Bruce Lee.... i question how he would do in a MMA fight vs someone like Fedor or Noguiera.... the minute Bruce's back hit the mat... the fight would surely be over with. now... out in the open... where there's weapons.. obstacles to move around with.... bruce lee might be a harder man to defeat...
and in regard to black belts... i surely wouldnt mess with anyone with a BB... regardless of who they trained under...
but a purple belt under gracie berra... or ruas vale tudo.... would certainly beat the shit out of a black belt from your local karate instructor...
right now i take Muy Thai and BJJ... the instructor trained Kevin Jordan and some other UFC fighters...
probably be interested in Judo next.... there's some successful Judo fighters on the pro level.... Karo Parisyan being the first that comes to mind.

I took Kuk Sool Won for a while until I tore my acl...wish I could have been in it longer. I loved it. My brother and I were supposed to go to Korea for a tournament before my injury. I'd only be fighting people at my level, but I think I would have done well.
If it wasn't for martial arts, I'd probably still be 270 lbs, slow, have less patience and less respect (though I think I'm a good guy).
I've got a different outlook on confrontations. I'd try to avoid it first and foremost, but sure that I would hold my own if need be. I don't have a ton of training under my belt, but I guess I can just hire baby j if I ever become famous.
psh... none of yall got shit on me... I dont think yall can even hadoken yet.

Which location? I started kickboxing at the midtown one a couple weeks ago. Once they open up the one on 14th st, I think I might start doing MMA too. I did TKD when I was in high school, but I'm enjoying this a lot more and I haven't even done any real fight work yet.Originally Posted by sicksupra1

This is my first read on this thread. There are some def. good and bad points to consider. I feel that BJJ is a great MA; however, it like JDM is a bandwagon. Left in its true form it is pure and awesome. But when you mix in everyone elsesyou dont get the purity that BJJ was founded on. I know alot of people who will take 1 or 2 starter classes in BJJ and then say they know BJJ. Baby J can probably agree with me when I say, unless you have studied for more than (atleast a year - depending on the art) and under several instructors/masters then you haven't even brushed the tip on the iceberg of MA's. I studied Korean TKD (and yes there is more than one) for 2 years before I took any other MA. (^ to clarify above note, alot of TKD instructors start there own schools and mix in Jujitso and hapkido - thats what keeps the kids coming back ... a.k.a. the fun stuff) After moving from suwanee a long time ago to North GA we did not have anywhere to train. So I was forced to train with an American Standard version of TKD. I instructed there part time and was tought other forms as well (mentioned above). I have sparred with several different styles of martial arts and like Baby J said, in the right hands none are to be "pushed off as lame or weak." I respect all who take the time and dedicate themselves to a particular art. Its like guys who weld or doctors - you have to master it to become a professional.
I def. will have to agree with the comment said earlier in the post. Most of the time the most bad-ass guy in the place, will be aware of his surroundings but never (I mean never) get involved.

reading this just drives me crazy. I teach TKD and have been doing it for over 15 years now myself and I have been teaching for 4 plus years now.
When I hear people talk about "this martial art" is better, or can't be used, just goes to show how out of touch a lot of you are.
Some one that is good at martial arts nows how to use their art. Easiest way to explain this is the way that I explain it to 5 year olds.
Let's say you have two guys and they're building a house. One has a hammer and one has a screw driver. Of course it depends on what they use on who will be the most effective. The guy with the hammer wants to use nails and the guy with the screw driver wants to use screws. If you have nails, the guy with the hammer is better, screws and the guy with the screwdriver is better.
If someone is fighting with BJJ against TKD it all depends on if they know how to use their art. If I do TKD then I will make sure to keep it a stand up hitting match. If I did BJJ I would want to get in close and take it to the ground. It all depends on how good we are at the art. Not just one art better, but the people that practice them.
I've seen people from all walks and forms get bet by people in TKD and people in TKD get beat by people that are grapplers. Some people have the fighting drive in them and others don't.
So don't just go out and say, MY MARTIAL ARTS CAN BEAT YOUR MARTIAL ARTS.
Grappling isn't to good when there are two or more guys now is it?
are there any judo training centers near dunwoody? or in downtownish?

I didn't want to make a new thread. OK, I want to get back into martial arts. I was a brown belt in judo at Leeward Judo in Pearl City, Hi last year and like 2 months. I stopped doing Judo because I couldn't find any place in GA around the Gwinnett area that had a place to do Judo aside from the Boys and Girls club witch didn't have any Judo classes like they said they did. I want to try a new martial arts. Tae kwon do, karate, jujitsu, kung fu, muay thai etc... Whatever it may be, I perfer it to be in the Gwinnetter Sugar hill buford area. Closer to my house so I don't have that far to drive. Aside from doing martial arts I have been on my schools varsity wrestling team. Last year I almost made it to state but lost. If anyone can help me out and point me to a good place I will apperciate it. Reps will be given.
I got a question sorta along the lines of Binary, but with a twist. Would being 19 y/o be too late of a start in MA? I would like to learn something, not only to be able to defend myself, but also get in better shape. Any if so anyone know any good places around the alpharetta/johns creek area to train?
