Default Ga Tech Housing & Parking???

Well, I'm in a dual degree program with Georgia Tech, so I'm about to transfer there this fall. Therefore I got a few questions!

    1. Why the fuck is Ga Tech parking and housing deposit so damn high?
    2. Next, what dorms (apt style) would you recommend living in?
    3. What parking lots are near those dorms?
    4. What are the odds of getting where I want to live and park at being a transfer student?
    5. Last but not least, how good is campus safety? (Are there many vehicle brake-ins and etc....?)

Thanks!!! And hopefully I can meet some of the IA-GT peeps

These are the answers that I can give you right now:

    1. Because it will be the very first of many screwings you will get at Tech, so they had to start you out right.
    2. I would absolutely recommend an apartment style place. West campus is great.
    3. No idea, look up the parking map.
    4. Zilch, zippo. Almost as bad as your odds of getting the classes that you need at a reasonable time.
    5. What are you kidding? I sure hope you have a beater.

Damn I'm glad that I got out.
What if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today.

    1) what sniper said that's why i moved off campus after my sophmore year and i was recognized INSTANTLY by most ppl in the parking office, lol. i could tell you some stories about breaking my car out of impound...

    2) west campus has the vast majority of apt. style housing. this is probably where you'll end up, assuming you can get into one. maybe that whole situation has improved since i left tech...but i doubt it

    3) they have some residential ones close by...when you sign up for a parking permit they'll show you what's there. again, that's assuming you actually GET a permit for a zone close to where you live.

if they still oversell the permits like they used to...then you can normally park anywhere afterhours as long as you have a permit at all. just don't expect to actually drive to classes (unless you wanna get raped with parking fees) or get home late and find a reasonably close spot (unless it's the weekend, lol).

    4) what sniper said

    5) cars get robbed left and right at tech, but from my experience (i used to work for the police when i was there)...usually it's kids breaking windows and stealing shit left out in the open. so don't leave ipods laying around the seat and pull the face off your radio when you park. that plus a SOLID alarm system (kill switch, fuel cutoff, etc) is about all you can really do, living anywhere downtown. but if you've spent money on your ride you should do this anyways...

I know of a few friends that live in the dorms and such..

I wouldn't do it.. its small/cramped and you have a roommate in the room with you..

unlike GSU.. I'd get an apartment

Live in the GSU village if you can. GTech is something like 70% guys, right? The GSU village is full of fine ass girls.

here's my take (i actually worked for housing to save my self a shit ton of hassle).

    1) cuz GT makes a living off of raping their own students, u'll learn this in the classrooms once u get there as well one idea is if ur a frat kinda guy, join one and at least u can park near the house.

    2) i'd recommend the aptments on the west side or harris on the east side (gl getting in though, it's def one of the better places to stay on east side).

    3) u've got a parking deck on both sides of campus as well as small lots and even some roadside parking all over the place.

    4) very slim chance of getting both the place u want to live and park, however if u can somehow manage to get a parking pass ANYWHERE, u might be able to trade with someone that has recently moved or something.

    5) housing chances and locations for transfer students are actually pretty good, most get put into aptments because they're considered upper class and easy to fill in 1 room vacancies in a lot of the aptments.

The Parking department is the most corrupt department on campus. You'll have to walk around a bunch, but I would just find the safe, free spots to park at around the outside of campus and go that route

[quote2. Next, what dorms (apt style) would you recommend living in?
    3. What parking lots are near those dorms?[/quote]
I lived in the dorms for 5 years. If you aren't 21 yr old or younger (or you have already lived on your own away from your parents) then you won't be happy in the dorms. Yes, you can meet more college people that way... but if you move into the nice apt style dorms then everyone keeps their doors closed anyways. Homepark and centennial place are very nice alternatives

    4. What are the odds of getting where I want to live and park at being a transfer student?

Its 30% luck of the draw and 70% seniority. Campus safety as far as your car goes is pretty much russian roullete. I know 1 guy who got their car stolen and a dozen whose cars were broken into, but i know plenty of people with nicer cars that never had any problems.

Thanks!!! And hopefully I can meet some of the IA-GT peeps
