    Default First of the year

For me anyway. lol. I was hunting a powerline, with an orchard to my front and left. He walked out from almost straight ahead. I pulled the gun up and decided to shoot. He walked behind some grass, and as he moved right I had to maneuver in the stand as I am right handed. Had to rush the shot, but pulled the trigger right before he made the woodline. I got down, and looked for blood couldnt find it, so I got back in the stand and remarked the spot. Went down, found light colored blood and hair. Found him about 50 yards in the woods. 4 Points, around 150-160 lbs. Good meat to come. Bullet double lunged him and missed almost all the meat.

Congrats man. That deer may have a small rack, but it looks pretty mature. Should be some good meat!

Sorry but I have been around hunting for awhile and I am pretty positive that deer isn't 3 yrs old with a small rack like that. That buck is maybe at the most a year and a half to 2 years old. You can tell this just by looking at the face, it is sorta scrunched together as deer grow and mature over time their face along with body grows and becomes longer. Also there is no way this deers rack wasn't going to get any bigger. First off because its a young deer so it had alot of maturing to do and being its a 4 point if given a few more years would have turned into probably a very presentable buck by the way the rack is going out towards the ears and up. I am not trying to be an ass or anything because yes this is a very good meat deer seeing the age it probably is means the meat is most likely pretty tender. Also another thing spikes are known to age and not produce a nice rack or even produce a rack at all because of their genetics, yes some spikes do turn into decent deer after a few years but most stay spikes their whole life and the deer that are like this don't produce any points off of what they have already been growing the spikes continue to get longer and maybe even have some mass to them as well but no character. My brother shot a 3 1/2 year old spike last year and its antlers were over a foot long but not producing any distinct character so he took it so its genetics couldn't be spread. Him and my dad used to manage about 600 acres and they trimmed out the bucks and does that weren't showing signs of good nutrition and genetic make-up which made for a very promicing and rewarding few years to come. But once again all-in-all congrats on the deer and good luck for the rest of the year.

Also one thing I left out that was just pointed to my attention. the neck on this buck is not long or big at all which also points out it is a YOUNG deer.

Your exactly right. Your brother showed me this the other day and was telling me something about why it couldn't be 3 years old and the rack not getting any bigger.

I would guarantee ATLEAST 2 years old due to the fact that it was in full rut, and we have several first year bucks that are just ignoring the does 3 maybe not, but 2 to 2 1/2 yeah it is. This is def not a first year deer. and once side had 3 and the other was one point. This deer was never going to amount to much. and it weighed in the 150-160 range so it wasnt that small.

There a 1 to 1 1/2 year old deer chasing does just like 5 year old bucks, and yes if the other side was messed up like you say then of course this deer wouldn't amount to very much. Its a nice deer none the less and a good thing you took it out. Congrats!

Did it weigh 150-160 before or after being field dressed?
