Default WTB a Gun, but which one

ok i went looking for a handgun tonight and am a noob at weapons. the man i saw wasn't very helpful, and i will not say where i went. i looked at glocks, taurus, and S&W. i really like the taurus 24/7 but don't know anybody that has one. my girl has a glock and loves it but i have never fired it. i also liked the glock that was similar to the 24/7. but it comes down to which is the most practical and reliable. also what is the diff btwn a .40 and a 9mm, price is the same and im not sure what im going to get but i want to buy one within the week. i had looked into an skyy cpx-1 9mm sub compact, but after seeing the kel tec p11 im not sure if thats what i want. i have small hands so i cant get a ginormous gun. any input, info would be greatly appreciated, pros and cons etc. thanks IA. i have shot a 38 specail many times b/c thats all my dad has.

Alright, slow down. Ton of questions in that paragraph. Lol.
I've heard good things about the 24/7, however I've never shot one so I'm not commenting on that. If you can fire your woman's Glock, then do so. See how it is and see if you like it. I'm not getting into the caliber debate because of so many different opinions. 9mm is good for some people and .40 is for others. I recommend shooting both (renting) and seeing what you like. What else ya got?

well i have a taurus 24/7 duotone, and i love the gun. the only issue i have is that the trigger sucks balls. you damn near have to pull it threw the gun just to get it to fire lol. the difference between a 9mm and a .40 cal is the caliber. the 40 uses a slightly bigger bullet than the 9mm, which is why 9's usually hold more bullets.

i know i asked a lot of questions lol, i am going tommorow to rent a few guns and see how they do, i think my girl has a 9mm, but don't quote me on that. im really just looking for opinions of gun owners here, any and all. i don't want to wind up with a pos gun that im not happy with. the place i went tonight did nnot have the 24/7 to rent which sucked.

THe mid size GLock .40 is nice, i had one. Really good gun.

the 9mm is cheaper to shoot ammo wise.

for STOPPING power most people will say the .40 is the way to go, but i mean theres tons of opinions on both sides.

I carry a 9mm SW right now, but wouldnt hesitate to go back to a glock

Go to a shooting range and rent. You should only have to pay one fee for renting and you can keep exchanging guns, just have to buy the ammo. Choose the type of gun and caliber you're most comfortable shooting.

the more i read i'm leaning towards a 40 cal, that was the only recomendation from the person at the gun store this eve. the taurus 24/7 was like the perfect fit for me thus far, and the glock was the same feel, maybe a little better. on the way out i looked at a S&W but did not get to touch it. i'll check that place out b/c i wouldn't mind buying a used one, so the 40 cal ammo is a little more costly, but in a situation where i would even use a gun i would want stopping power. im also thinking about getting a 12 or 20 g shotgun for the house but that depends on what i can get the handgun for etc. thanks guys i'll let you know what i find. i'm gonna call the place in smyrna to see what they have before i drive there cuz i live in winder!!!!

Don't get caught up in the "stopping power" thing either. With hollow points you won't notice a difference. Lol

Then you want a glock, maybe even a springfield XD. You will find hundreds of people supporting pratically every gun on the market, but remember the majority of the people on gun forums are there to justify thier purchase and to make it sound like they have the best gun ever made. When fact is they shoot 100 rounds down range on a clean gun and think its reliable, a possibly deadly assumption. Look at the guys that do this stuff for a living, or as a serious hobby and they have glock, XDs and custom (or semi-custom) 1911s.

Just my opinion. Just to remember to take everyones opinion (including mine) lightly and only really listen to those people who do tactical training for a living, or are in specialized units in the military or police... and even then u just never know.

Caliber? The one you can shoot the best. Everyone must remember that the handgun is weak by nature and i dont care if u have 45acp... if you shoot someone in the hand it isnt going to do much so hitting one of 3 vital zones is imperative.

and yes .40sw seems to be a great 'meet in the middle' round.

gotcha, i'm going to rent a glock today to see how it feels since that is what mr 5.0 rolls with and a lot of military, now the military went to 9mm a while back i heard. i have had a lot of use with a 38 and of course whatever i get will see a lot of time at the range so i can fully learn the weapon. lol at the hand comment, that would just piss them off more than anything.

Most police are going to Glock .45 here in cobb County.

I carried my .40 and it was fine, GGPIS3 has a 9mm Glock and he carries it with no problems.

Personally i liked the way the .40 shot and felt in my hand. So thats why i went with it at the time.

Now i carry a 9mm SW just cause i got a good deal on it

military has been running 9mm for a longgg time now (right after Nam. I belive). Standard issue sidearm is Beretta 92FS. Which replaced the Colt 1911 calibre .45. Lots of units world wide still use 1911s. I have heard reports of Special Forces (army), lots of SWAT units, and even some MARSOC units issuing 1911s. I would recomend renting a 1911 while ur there, but u might fall in love.... and if that happens... empty pocket book.

Yes alot of LEOs carry glocks, its the norm i would say. Some depts allow you to buy your own duty gun, and then the 1911 comes into play as many LEOs like them.

goodluck and let us know what u find.

Yea.. but u can get a fairly decent 1911 for 700-900 bucks. Whould i use it as a duty weapon. NO.

A nice 1911 will cost 4 times what a glock costs, but they are wayy sexier

Custom 1911s run up to 4-6 grand easily. eeeekkkkk

I have a Glock 23 (compact .40) and I love it I like the 27 as well. You can get one like new on GON.com (Georgia outdoor news forum) these are local middle aged sporting men you are buying from not your local thug.

Adventure Outdoors is also pretty cheap. But they always have low stock well in glocks they do every time I go Although they can order it for you.

ok i could not rent today b/c my return is not useful until tomorrow. i found an FNP 40 cal that seemed to feel great, but the place i went had discounts for retired military, my dad could go in and get me a new glock 23 40 cal for 399+ tax. i did really like the fnp 40 cal also but i have not done my research yet. tomorrow im going to rent a glock 23 in athens and give it a go, if i like it the glock 23 40 cal or the fnp would be my best bet. i stressed reliability to the person at the store and the FNP was 2nd in line to the glock. but a glock 23 for 399 is not bad from the pricing i have seen the last few day.

i carry a glock g22 .40 and i love it. you can tell you have a handful of firearm when you shoot it and it comes with the forementioned stopping power. anything larger is really pointless unless you hunt with it or just like to carry big handguns. ive had taurus' and rugers both in 9mm and liked them both. as long as you have the hard case, taurus' carry a transferable lifetime warranty which is nice. dont try to bargain hunt with a handgun because you may depend on it to save yours and your families life. ive put about 600 rounds through my glock with no problems whatsoever. imo dont shortchange yourself with a cheap handgun.

You can't go wrong with Glock,
a good alternative is a Springfield XD.
If it's your first gun, remember Glock only has a trigger safety, as the XD will also have a palm safety.

The Kel Tec pf9 and p11 are good guns if you can find one, but not good as a first or primary gun.

The most bang for your buck is a .40 but you will have more shots with a 9mm.

But if you like knock down power, and are a fan of Taurus, look in to the "Judge," sure its ugly, but who's gonna get up after that....

Whatever you get make sure it has a Lifetime warranty.

Ive got a 1911 Kimber, and while its a FANTASTIC shooting pistol, its very expensive to shoot .45ACP recreationally, fucking ammo is ridiculous. If i were looking for an inexpensive but high quality gun to carry, id definitely look toward a SW M&P .40. Ive shot one on multiple occasions and they are fantastic shooting pistols. I will say though that my next pistol will be a Walther p99.

I was looking at the PT24/7 in .40 cal, and rented one to try when I was looking for my first carry gun. It was okay, but I wasn't too terribly thrilled about it either. I ended up doing some research, and decided to "settle" on a Smith and Wesson SW40VE. A lot of people bash on these guns, and from one standpoint, I can see why, but I also don't get the big hoopla at the same time. I hear the "they're junk" and "the trigger pull is too heavy." Junk -- absolutely not, I LOVE mine, and carry it daily, thus trusting my life to it. The trigger action IS heavy, it reminds me of my .357 King Cobra as far as pull weight, but that is EASILY modified, and my shot groupings got much better all around after doing the mod. I also own a Glock 35 that I carry some, but I just haven't shot it enough to be fully comfortable carrying it all the time. Out of the box, it is a FANTASTIC gun, ithas a long sight radius, allowing it to be more forgiving in the aim department, and the trigger pull is SUPER light, which, if you're careless even once, IS a safety issue. I believe it's rated from the factory at ~3.5lbs, and I don't dispute that at all. Opinions, are like assholes, we all have them, and they all stink but your own, and which gun to buy, shoot, and possibly carry is just that -- opinion.

As far as 9mm vs .40 or .357 SIG (very closely related calibers), well, again that's opinion, but I can give you some info. The 9mm is going to be a faster, smaller round, bar none, but if you ever plan on having to use it for defense, they are known at times to over penetrate, going right through the "target." Gene is right as far as hollow points helping to alleviate that, but that's apples to oranges, IMO. The .40 is going to a larger, slower moving round that is less likely to overpenetrate (that does NOT mean it can't won't happen, just reduces the chances) and there is going to be more tissue damage, thus dropping your subject faster. I'm all about consolidating calibers, so all my handguns, with the exception of the revolver I inherited from my father, are .40, and I love it. You get CLOSE to the knockdown power of a .45 with a good bit less recoil. Comparing it to the 9mm, there is going to be SLIGHTLY more recoil, and it's going to have a "snappier" feel to it. Hopefully that helps you out some. If you have any questions, I as well as other wil do our best to help you out.

dude just buy that glock for 399. I dont know what the F ur waiting for Worst case scenario is if you decide in the future you want to get down and dirty and pay for some good training chances are you wont be "that guy" in the class thats gun breaks down (been there done that with an old Kimber 1911 of mine, biggest POS ever made by the way).

Oh and if u can pay a few extra bucks for night sights, DO IT!

Please at minimum remember the 4 rules, and know them!

    1. ALL guns are ALWAYS loaded.
    2. Never let the muzel cover anything you do not wish to destroy or kill.
    3. FInger straight and off the trigger until sites are on target.
    4. Be sure of your target and whats behind it.

if u dont mind ill give my 2 cents on each?!?!

    1. i dont care if u just cleared and unloaded the gun, rules 2 3 and 4 still apply like your life depends on it!

    2. doesnt matter if ur gun shopping or at the range. NEVER cover anyone or anything u dont wanna kill. Never ceases to amaze me the people pointing or cover employees or shoppers at gun stores. Pisses me off. Also people at the range, some people set thier guns down pointing to the left or right.... those people are idiots and should be banned from ranges. Just becuase the gun isnt in ur hands doesnt mean u shouldnt be mindful of where its pointing AT ALL TIMES.

    3. never fails, gun noobies and "veterans" finger automatically goes into the trigger frame before ready to kill. finger should be straight and the finger tip should be AT LEAST touching the seam between the slide and frame, if not higher.

    4. do not take the shot inless u know 100% whats behind it. this can even happen at the range. sometimes at my range i find peoples targets lining up behind mine. just realize that if this happens at the range and u take the shot, imagine that u just killed a bad guy.. but in the process took out the innocent kid 15meters behind him too. I couldnt live with that. So just get in the habbit of checking beyond the target.

ohh yes on these rules, my family and girlfriend included have stressed these points to me through the years. i don't even like a revolver that is opened pointed at me and have been very uncomfortable when other people have done the same even though its "Unloaded". i dont like them being pointed at me just like other folks would not want me to do the same. my girl is going to school me, turns out she has a glock 21 45 cal(holy crap). whatever i buy im going to take it to the range often to learn it the best i can. as my girl says dont pull it unless your gonna use it and don't point it unless you want to kill it. something like that.

here is my gun Its a Ruger KP90 stainless steel .45cal and i love it but you need some man hands and a good grip to shoot it. I let a friend of mine shoot it after shooting a 1911 .45 and mine had so much more kick he almost wound up kissing it.

ok so i rented the glock 23 and the glock 19 9mm today. the 40 cal glock 23 is my Fav thus far, the 9mm was accurate, baut after the 2nd magazine i was getting much better. firing through quickly to see what i could do i only missed two times on 13 shots. i am in love with the glock 23 40 cal, the 9mm was ok and could fire more rapidly, but i liked the 23, the sad part is when i got to the store it was on hold for someone til tomorrow, so if they don't pick it up i can buy it brand new for $399, but if this person gets it i don't know how long i will have to wait. BTW i shot my girls glock .45, the last three rounds of the day and hit the red in the center on all three shots, all in all my bro said i did pretty well for the first time shooting a glock and he has had military training a few years ago when he did some MP work while enlisted. i do like the XD but im looking to spend 400 and thats it until my girl pays me back abt 2grand. the first magazine i was anticipating too much kick and hit the mass but was a little low. the 9mm was easy to make head shots to, and quickly, bit i love the glock 23, any ideas where i can get one with a military discount for around the same price, and if i buy one used does it still have the warranty, the clerk was ready to go home at that point.

i havent seen them that cheap so who knows. call around, most places give LEO and Mil discounts.

oh and my 2 cents on your shooting.. if u want it..lol..... train a distance where your groups are smaller than your fist. From a stand still you should train as anything outside of fist size is a miss on the torso. From stand still anything outside the triangle between the two eyes and nose is a miss.

There is medical/anatomical reasons for this i could get into if anyone wants. but its gun show time now..

Get the 23, u will love it

24/7's are pretty nice. my dad has one in 9mm and in 45acp. the only complaint i have is the sights. the over/under figure 8 sight sucks BALLS. other than that they are nice. check out the springfield armory XD-series. VERY NICE pistols. stay away from glock.... personal opinion....

u should eloborate on why u dont like glock.

usually people like glock or XD, NOT both. Due to the differnt angles of the grips. Whats your reason for saying stay away from glock?

PS. the gun show today SUCKEEDDD!!! waste of time and money.
