Default Michael Phelps and the Bong....

What's your opinion on it? Stoners are getting mad that he apologized and that a lot of celebrities do it and it is not a big issue, pot should be legal anyway etc.

Non-stoners are getting mad that he did it, due to moral issue, his status as a 'role model', his credibility now as an athlete etc.

Do you agree with him doing it/ condemn him for doing it?

    Discuss?

    Oh, and I expect.....

But wouldn't it kind of set a 'bad' example for those looking up to him? The bottomline is that he was doing something 'illegal'. Small as it may be, it is not like he just ran a red light, but he was in essence, doing 'drugs'.

This is something to be expected from normal 'celebrities', but not from an athlete, who is expected to keep his body 'healthy' so to speak.

No, nobody is perfect. And if your children think they have be perfect, they're setting themselves up for failure for the rest of their lives. IMO he's still a good role model. He's one of the best athletes the world has seen and it's the medias fault for blowing this WAY out of proportion.

Thats what would really be shitty about being "famous"...you cant enjoy your own damn life without someone with a camera breathing down your neck

It think he could be setting bad example for children looking up to him. I think the biggest issue is that it's illegal, because smoking pot is not as bad for your body as drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. If he can smoke pot and stay healthy thats fine with me. If he wants to destroy his body that's also fine with me.

I think he gave an empty apology, but I really don't care. I don't think it's the government's, or anyone else's, business what people do with their own bodies.

That's infringing upon someone else's wellbeing vs just your own.

Ok i see your point... BUT - Michael Phelps never accepted being a "role model" or being an example to anybody, all that motherfucker does is swim, he likes it and he's good at it. If somebody chooses to look up to him or put him on a pedestal, that is on them or their parents.

Good point. But he has a gift that automatically makes people strive to be just like him. Just like any star athlete, some people want to use him as an inspiration.

Yes, he did not ask to be a role model, but it comes with the territory. Once you do something great, you are going to have followers.

He knew how people viewed him and made his own choices, which OTHER PEOPLE shouldn't have a problem with. I also second what alpine had to say because now all the right-winged assholes will see that even an Olympian is subject to ''enjoy'' themselves from time to time. LOL

Its illegal so he shouldn't have done it and its a bad example. Its his fault, no one elses. It was legal then it would be just another day in the park. You can bitch about how it should be legal but it just isn't so there is consequence.

hes an idiot because if i was a millionaire, i woldnt be caught dead in public with anything that could damage my money.

He has endorsement deals that have moral clauses in them. If he gets caught with drugs, he COULD be fucked.

To be at a party, toking off a bong, hes an idiot.

If you are gonna smoke, do it in private

its like TI getting caught with Guns when he can have an army protecting him, or Allen Iverson getting caught with weed when he has MILLIONS

    I dont get it

    equally as retarded.

FYI Vicks problem wasnt the actual dogfighting, it was the racketeering and illegal gambling that got him in trouble.

While the dog fighting is totally cruel and demeaning and stupid to be involved with, it was the high price ILLEGAL GAMBLING and psuedo racketeering that got him in trouble

You cant equate Vicks FEDERAL charges with a small misdemeanor , IMO of course

Yea, I agree doing illegal things in public isn't smart at all. For all we know some of his close friends took that ''behind closed doors'' and tried to make some money on the tabloids, but the fact is he takes a risk when he does something that's frowned upon in society. But then again, I guess some people think they're bulletproof, so to speak.

What's dumb are the people who put celebrities/athletes on such a high pedestal, and are then suprised when something like this comes out.

Phelps should not have even admitted smoking anything. There was not even any smoke in the bong...

Second of all, all these parents that are complaining that their kids role model has become a bad influence should fuck off. He is a 23 year old who spends 3/4 of his year in a swimming pool. They shouldn't be looking up to a 23 year old. Parents nowadays are so fuckin lazy, make your kids look up to you and respect you, and not some kid.

Thirdly, I'm relieved to find out he smokes weed, makes me think i someday might be able to win 8 gold medals at the Olympics...

I think it is funny that people are up in arms about him smoking weed, but hardly anybody remembers/cares about the fact that he got a DUI when he was 19. Apparently it is OK to risk killing somebody with your car under the influence of alcohol instead of hitting a bong after winning 15 gold medals.

Also a good point. Both are illegal activities, but somehow, smoking a bong makes it a worse offense, just because it is 'a drug'......which is not fair.

you guys are all missing the point.

I could give a shit about him smoking pot, Gary Hall did it and it almost ruined his career.

The point is he put his entire monetary life at stake, by being stupid.

The moral point is dumb, but, it directly corelates to his MONEY.

I definitely agree with you there. If I was getting millions in endorsements, then I wouldn't do anything in public to compromise it.

Yes he might lose some endorsements, and because of this might not get to that $100 million endorsement milestone, but i don't think he'll go hungry anytime soon.
