BARTENDING SCHOOL

just wondering if anyone knows a good school for this they know of i have looked up a few online and have a couple in mind but just thought id ask....also does anyone know about how much this school cost? i cant find it online...the price i mean i guess i will have to call or something but ya so let me know

There are several schools around atlanta. ABC Bartending, etc. If you look on the back of the creative loafing you will see ads for several. My suggestion is to go in and talk to them and see what they have to offer and what type of job placement, if any, they can assist you with.

It is a local paper that is put out for atlanta. You can usually pick them up at BlockBuster, Barnes & Noble, CD Warehouse, places like that.

talk to some local bartenders they will tell you it isnt cool to goto school for it, or atleat it isnt cool to tell people that work there thats where you learned it.. i dont know why its apparently a bartending secret society..

ABC is actually pretty pricey....my advice is to find a smaller bar and try to work your way in there first and then you can move into a bigger bar....in most cases....most bartenders start out as servers and then are trained to bartend and that's how they get into the business....

I went to bartending school and worked several jobs that they helped me find. It was fine when I did it but maybe things have changed

ok cool thanks...personally i dont really care what other bartenders think if i went to school or not bc i am ganna be doing it to make money, i think school would prob be the best way to learn bc they will teach me stuff and it would seem to be a lot harder to try and just go out on my own and work my way to becoming a bartender..

Um yea. I personally believe that bartending school is crap. I have bartended for many years and my managers always threw out the apps with bartending school as their only experience in the serving indusrty. It was kind of like a joke to us. We would laugh as soon as they walked away. Sorry TEG

Now some schools may help you find a job and I can't vouch for what kind of job they can get for you because I have never worked anywhere that will hire students. Your best bet is to get a job at a resturant and get some experience there serving and move up. At most places it is a promotion to be moved up to bartender. My first bartending gig I got from being at that place for 3 years. I had to wait in line. It's a seniority thing. If you were ever to get a job bartending based on bartending school alone, I would think that the staff would treat you like IA treats the kids that come on here talking about street racing.

I'm not tryingto make you feel bad. I'm just being honest. I waited tables for 15 years, bartended for 10 if those 15. Bartending school may teach you something, but I don't think it will give you the hands on experience you need to serve people. You need the total restarunt experience and believe me you want it. It's hard and it sucks. People are mean and you need to learn how to deal with people before you have to deal with the drunk ones Bartending isn't just about making drinks, there is a whole lot more to it. Making drinks is the easiest part of all and takes the least amount of time to learn.

Its cool sweetie, I had some decent jobs to help out supplement my income for a while. Got the expierence and it was fun and do not regret it.

1 more thing...in Atlanta, the good jobs where you make $$$ are about who you know. Like most things that are worth a damn. It sucks but it is the truth.

When I went it was a long time ago so prices change. Basically they will get you in the door. Most will want you to start off as a waiter before they will let you behind the bar, a few will let you start off behind the bar. Just have to check into it and find out for yourself.

I know that I am a few days late, but I would like to say that what Tracy said is so so true. It was the same way for me. I started out at T.G.I.Fridays. They love to hire inexperienced people. Them being on my resume, for some reason got me alot of my other bartending gigs and I was always hired on the first interview. They really have a good reputation. I was a server there and after 3 months I was promoted. Another place that likes to hire inexperienced bartenders is Joes Crabshack. I personally would start off serving and work my way up. Like Tracy stated, my bar managers use to laugh at the apps and throw them away too. LOL

For example: When I was working at 201 Courtland (a now defunct club) they decided to hire a chick who was straight out of bar school. Someone asked her for a Cosmopolitan and she was literally searching for specifically "Absolute" From my understanding (because I have had to train quite a few) Bartending schools don't teach the basics.

This chick thought that a Cosmo HAD to have Absolut Vodka, cranberry, and Cointeau with a lime. She didn't know that it was just name brand liquer they were using and that she could have used any other vodka, triple sec etc. and like I said, she wasn't the only one that I came across. There were others, but differnt drinks like margaritas, sour apple martinis (oh the many ways to make them)

Really depends on the school, I know the one I went to we were taught how to make them using well liquors and then how to make them top shelf. Just depends on the school.
