^ if i missed something ; if you have questions post up and i'll try to help ya through it... after you got it up and running you can now file share w/ the world so if you want to share mp3s,videos,etc this is a nice way of doing it from home w/o connecting to a P2P, plus you can disply all kinds of bs for fun like we got here on IA

here is mine from home (i do have a NWS pic on there so be warned) http://24.98.68.96

*** if you want to run an actually domain name say http://www.paulfirestine.com from your home pc you will need to used something like www.dtdns.com to help ya out. 1st thing buy the name you want through www.godaddy.com or something like that then 2nd go to www.dtdns.com and setup an account give them your external ip and they will send the domain name you bought to that address.

    Paul,
I've never done port forwarding before. I use Bellsouth DSL at my house. Do you have instructions on how to set that up or which company to use? Also Masuimi Max is a badass bitch

as far as port forwarding you won't need anything else besides 80 for just a webserver for home... if you have dmz use that on your router b/c it will do the work for you, but you can open up other ports like below.

    7(Echo)
    21(FTP)
    23(TELNET)
    25(SMTP)
    53(DNS)
    79(finger)
    80(HTTP)
    110(POP3)
    119(NNTP)
    161(SNMP)
    162 (SNMP Trap)

all depends on the type of server your trying to run

yo paul can you host a zip file of all of those MP3's and Viedos that are up there...just the music, not the porn...to save me from doing each one seperately...

i don't know what you like but i've got a whole bunch of music too...

and i won't get photoshop...my dad said he could bring it over to me...it was just taking forever too.

to have a true dedicated server you should really use a different connection if you want to play the game at the same time. you can either get a card and have two connections to one computer or use two computers with two seperate connections (not just a router)...with a typical connection it would really slow down your gaming and it'd be like playing on dial up.

unless you start running a sever that is getting alot of traffic i won't notice anything... i would suggest making sure you are running 512-1gb of ram to support the extra services

I'd just run my VPC w/ 2K3 EE Server(MSDNAA is great) or run Apache off my Linux box. But for some reason I've set it up where a 3 person office has 7 computers and I'm tempted to buy another as a dedicated file server for my next project.

This is also assuming you're not running the awesomely slow DSL connection that Bellsouth peddles as commercial broadband. It'd cost $700 a month before I'd get anything close to enough to host a standard website on site.

you can get split T for 500$ a month, and i used to run a few sites from my home server(charter) when i had static ips, w/o any issue, now as far as running a site such as IA no way you can support on a home system, but most people aren't getting nor need that amount of traffic. for normal use its the best and cheapest way to host files.
