has anyone in there family succeeded or tried to commit suicide. i just need some adivce. my grand father was missing on tuesday from 9am to about 3:45pm when one of his friends found him in the back of a hotel parking lot, van unlocked and running, he had taken 22 Ambien and had an open knife on the consol next to him. he says it is all because of my uncles (his sons) fighting and one of them accusing him of stealing from his company which he does the books payroll and all that shit. my grand father proclaims to be a very Christian man and really always has been. he never seems stressed out, hell the day it happened nothing was different from what my grand mother said. so anyways if yall can give me ANY advice i would greatly appreciate it cause my family looks to me for being the strong one and holding it together but i just dont know what to do this time. i want to go over to his house and talk to him about all of this when he gets out of the hospital, hes at Ridge View for bout a week and then there realeasing him. he can check out anytime tho. anyways please someone help me out.

oh and i dont wanna hear that i just need to pray cause that has never worked in the past.......

But my coworker tried to commit suicide by overdosing on pain pills and they found her underneath her bed and got her to the hospital just in time. When she got out, they put her in a mental institute for a few days. Did they say for sure that he wouldn't be put in one?

he went to Kennestone when the paramedics picked him up, but later they transfered him to Ridge View (its a mental hospital) he'll be out in a week tho, but he can leave anytime if he wants

I would suggest getting to the bottom of exactly what happened. You have to approach your grandfather in a very non-threatening, non-judgmental way. My aunt did commit suicide and it is not an easy thing to deal with. I don't know you, or your family situation but it is something that you will never fully get over or know "how" to deal with. It's something that goes beyond fully comprehending. I would say that he has more issues than just his sons arguing, accusations. Generally there is something that goes a little deeper than what meets the eye. Good luck, I hope your grandfather realizes from this experience that he truly does have people who care about him and how many people would be affected by him taking his own life. I would definately have someone nearby him for a while, if I am not mistaken the statistics show that most people who attempt suicide unsuccessfully usually try again.

I would say yes I have seen evidence that would suggest that. My brother tried to kill himself by drinking a lot of anti freeze. the doctor said that the alcohol that he drank before the actual act is what slowed down the process of his organs shutting down. My heart goes out to your family and you as well. I know that you seemed to not care for prayer but when the doctor told the family that my brother was not going to make it, prayer was the only thing that kept my mother and myself form going off the deep end. Maybe try to urge him to find a way to communicate his feelings and stress so he doesn't feel like there is no where to turn, before his stress builds up to that point again.

I have seen recently some stuff that may suggest that a propencity to suicide can possibly be genetically linked. Family history of mental illness, suicide, depression can definately have an affect on the likelihood of a person to attempt suicide.

I personally feel that people who do unsuccessfully attempt suicide have a whole different set of issues as well. Depending on the circumstances surrounding it, he could have been wanting to punish his son's for the way they have been acting by harming himself. It could be an attention thing. I hate to make inferences about people and situations that I do not know anything about. I guess my main point is that there could be a large host of problems that your grandfather was encountering when he made the decision to do what he did. You have to keep an open mind and if you want to try to make any progress towards resolution keep an open dialogue with him and try to get him to verbalize what he was thinking/feeling.

i don't think SUICIDE itself is genetic, but certain psychological disorders that cause suicidal thoughts are genetic (like depression, bipolar disorder, etc..)
Also certain medications are known to cause suicidal thoughts. is he taking any medications?
i would just advise you to take the Ambien away first, and any other pills that he could use as a method of suicide. also, if you are close to him, talking to him and trying to get to the root of this situation might also be a solution.

yea suicide itself is definatley not a genetic thing.

and from what you said you are the strong one in the family so it doesn't look like atleast at this stage that you have any signs of depression,bipolar, or multiple personalities or anything.

i had an uncle commit suicide as well, its rough because unlike a murder or an accident you can't place your anger on something or someone else. the person chose to take their life, and that is the saddest thing to see and try to understand.

my grandma has alzheimers and she has been trying to kill herself for months now, so i def know how you feel man.

i think the best thing you can do is talk to his sons and get them to reconcile for the sake of their father and just spend as much time with him as possible and make him feel like he is still important and needed in the family.

^ dude the being on the medicine that makes you want to commit suicide is scary as shit. Ive been on something like that before. Very non enjoyable. Never tried it but thought about it alot. Bad Stuff

Great Grandfather, Aunt and other in my family have succeeded in their attempts to end it all. It sucks and hurt like hell when you hear about it but that is their way of taking away the pain. Money is the root of all evil, it is also the reason why the above took there own, I would rather be poor and happy than rich and not happy.

My own mother attempted to comit suicide, she didnt succeed because I found her, its real fucked up feeling...prolly worse then them actually dieing because they just tried to kill themselve and you feel the pain that you just could have lost them and thats a very bad feeling because you then know what its like to know that they will pass in the future...the only advice I can give you is to not be like me and spend as much time with him as possible fore when he really does go, you may regret not doing so.
