Man arrested after car hits apartment

LORAIN — The driver of a car that tore out a fire hydrant, clipped two telephone poles and smashed into a Tower Boulevard apartment building early Saturday morning was likely drunk when the car crashed, according to a Lorain police report.
James Reed, 26, of Lorain, was charged with failure to control, driving under the influence, disorderly conduct intoxicated, disorderly conduct persisting and resisting arrest after fleeing the accident scene and leading police on a foot chase, the report said.
Firefighters described a bizarre scene on Tower Boulevard around 12:30 a.m.
“He clipped two light poles, knocked off the hydrant, hit a 15-foot pine tree and broke through the apartment building,” said Lorain Assistant fire Chief Randy Hupp. “We never did find that fire hydrant.”
Reed’s 24-year-old girlfriend was trapped inside the car after the wreck, but Reed still fled, the report said.
After being freed, the woman was transported to a local hospital and treated for a broken leg, firefighters said.
Reed’s 1993 Lincoln Continental smashed the wall of an apartment bedroom, but no one was inside, Hupp said.
