Do you look over before lane changes?

The question is just as the title states; Do you look over to ensure that there is not a car that is invisible in the line of sight of your mirrors before changing lanes? We were having a heated discussion about whether or not it is safe to look over before you change lanes. My boy said you should look over because you can't see what the car is doing ahead of you. My point is that vehicles/objects adjacent to or slightly behind your C-Pillar are invisible to your line of sight if you're only relying on what you see in your side and rear-view mirrors. Hence the need to look over for anything previously obstructed by the limitations of the lines of sight of your mirrors..

If you set up your mirrors good enough, you can almost completely eliminate blind spots. The trick is not to set the mirrors to look at your car's back end, but far enough out so that you can almost not see your back end. When you do this, you will see most cars in your mirror before they "dissappear" and appear in your pheriperal vision. For extra security, you can still "glance" to the side, but you won't have to do the break-neck manoeuver of looking back, and looking forward.

My girlfriend and her daughter was run off the road by some assbag driving an SUV on her way to see me. That was a call I was not happy getting. I always looked before that and made sure as hell I did after. Its not hard to see your blind spot, just lean foreward and look in the sideview. If someone runs me off the road with or without a loved one in the car they better pray they fucked my car up enough to not run them down and get thier plates because I will sue the ever loving shit out of them.

I always check, especially if I am in my dads jeep cause most the time I have the doors off and the mirrors are on the doors. My driver side mirror on my dakota is broke so I always make sure to look when I am in it.

I've gotten worse in the Lude, even when i look over i have a shitty blind spot, so i tend to signal, check mirrros, tilt head, look at a pillar, tilt head back, punch it and hope no ones there. hahahaha.

not really - my mirrors are set so that they cover the lane on either side of me - if I want to see the side of my car I either A) have to put my head by the window to see my drivers side or B) lean over to see the passenger side.

Its what Drivers Ed teacher taught me. Basically with that setup, you see the car in your rear view mirror - when he's halfway out of your rear view, he's at least halfway in one of your side mirrors, once he's halfway out of your side... well you can see them right beside you no blind spots

This is exactly how I set my mirrors, and there is no need to look over. The point is to not have much of the car reflecting in the mirror.

i think i can take the extra time to look, i've had a couple cars about wreck my car cause they didn't look and the shit would piss me off everytime so i think i can be curtious enough to watch out for other people. besides, its not like its hard or anything.

Cautious and responsible drivers look the fuck over and omit that Obscure Japanese mirror angle trick because the line of sight rules out the possibility of seeing everything adjacent to or slightly behind the C-pillar. Until it is scientifically proven that you don't have to look over in road cars with normal mirrors I will continue looking over my shoulder.

I look, and I use signals.

But people need to understand, that my turn signal isn't a request, it's a notification. It means :damnit man I'm coming over there, you see the blinking light right? Right, so I'm coming!

I always check unless I'm on a road alone. But usually I can see everything in the mirrors of my EF.
But I need to get better about using signals all the time, I mean I use them on like highways and when I'm around medium size traffic, but not when its lite traffic.

hell they teach it in drivers ed nowadays tho they still recommend that you double check quick glance over your shoulder - but I drew up a little sketch for proof



Blue lines = rear view
Red lines = area of side views
Green lines = driver peripheral and straight ahead

no matter what, a car near you will always be in a field of vision - and trust me, I drive like this with both an old muscle car ( HUGE C pillars ) and my Starion

Eh.. i always check the distance/conditions ahead of me to determine if its safe to check the mirrors. Of if i know i've been traveling in a "bubble" on the interstate (area between groups of cars) i'll just kinda scoot over.

But most the time i dont use my mirrors...because i dont need them.. i have a convertable.. so no blind spot c-pillar crap Just a quick glance and i can see plenty
