A man was injured by an explosion after he put gasoline instead of detergent into a washing machine, police said.

The explosion Saturday blew off the door to a laundry room in the man's apartment in the Summit-University neighborhood, Deputy Chief Mike Hogan said. There was no damage to the six apartment units in the building or other injuries.

The 49-year-old man had what appeared to be second-degree burns on up to 5 percent of his lower legs, Hogan said. Paramedics took him to Regions Hospital.

Described by neighbors as a "backyard mechanic," the man was using gasoline to wash his grease-soaked clothes for some reason and "didn't think anything of it," Hogan said. The hot water heater or another source ignited a fire that led to the explosion, he said.

KIEV (Reuters) - A man shouting that God would keep him safe was mauled to death by a lioness in Kiev zoo after he crept into the animal's enclosure, a zoo official said on Monday.

"The man shouted 'God will save me, if he exists', lowered himself by a rope into the enclosure, took his shoes off and went up to the lions," the official said.

"A lioness went straight for him, knocked him down and severed his carotid artery."

The incident, Sunday evening when the zoo was packed with visitors, was the first of its kind at the attraction. Lions and tigers are kept in an "animal island" protected by thick concrete blocks.

CBS) BOCA RATON, Fla. What was supposed to be a joyous birthday celebration turned frantic for a mother when she realized her son was missing after she forgot him at a Boca Raton children's restaurant.

According to officials, Michael Emmanuel Jr. was celebrating his 6th birthday with a group of friends and family on Saturday at the Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in Boca Raton, Fla.

When the child was found wandering around the restaurant unattended at about 10 p.m., restaurant personnel called Palm Beach Police.

The employees told authorities Michael knew his name and age but not his telephone number or his mother's name.

Restaurant representatives say his mother allegedly left the restaurant with the group around 8 p.m. not realizing her son was not with her. The next day, after a sleep over party at her home, she realized her son was missing.

His mother, 31-year-old Lacqetta Monroe, blamed the incident on a communications mix-up. Police say roughly 12 children and six adults gathered with Michael and as the party was wrapping up, the children piled into three seperate vehicles as the adults stood and talked in the parking lot for about 30 minutes.

One adult relative later told police deputies he was sure he had seen Michael in his mother's van, but as the adults conversed, the boy apparently got out and returned to the restaurant's play area, police say.

When Monroe arrived at her mother's Deerfield Beach home, she dropped off some of the children and took some of older ones to a skating rink.

She later said she believed Michael was with the group she had dropped off and assumed he would spend the night at his grandmother's home.

A hearing is set for Monday at the Broward County office of the Florida Department of Children & Families to determine if Monroe should be charged with a crime.

Sheriff's investigator Robert Falbe said Sunday he did not expect that to happen. He also said Monroe had no previous record with the DCF for child neglect. Both Monroe and Michael's grandmother declined comment.
