Default How to get gas prices back down...

got this email at work, thought i would share, never know, its a good idea and it might work
Exxon just became larger than Wal-Mart last quarter, continuing Record
    Profits.

Subject: Tired of High Gas Prices?

GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work

This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola
executive It came from one of his engineer buddies
who retired from Halliburton. It's worth your
    consideration.

Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit
close to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might
go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We
need to take some intelligent, united action.

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea. This makes
MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain
day" campaign that was going around last April or May!
The oil companies just laughed at that because they
knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by
refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience
to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever
thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can
really work. Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at
about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently
$2.79 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the
oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us
to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at
$1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to
teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not
sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each
day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we
are going to see the price of gas come down is if we
hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their
gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.
    How?

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop
buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if
we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T
purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies
(which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not
selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their
prices. If they reduce their prices, the other
companies will have to follow suit. But to have an
impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon
and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now,
don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and
I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of
    people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us
    send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and
those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =
3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches
the sixth group of people, we will have reached over
    THREE MILLION consumers.

If those three million get excited and pass this on to
ten friends each, then 30 million people will have
been contacted! If it goes one level further, you
guessed it.... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people.
    That's all!
(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million
and all you have to do is send this to 10 people....
Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician.
But I am . so trust me on this one.) :-)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends

    this
e-mail out to ten more people within one day of
receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be
contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you
didn't think you and I had that much potential, did
you! Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message
on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL
THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP
THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK

Also, if you remember the only people that the no gas days hurt was the gas station owners.

You forget, Exxon is one of the largest producers of gas and make money at all levels of production. Wouldn't really hurt them.

They post this exact same thing every summer before the gas prices go up. Nothing new, and it doesn't work.

The only way to hurt gas companies is for the majority of the population to stop driving gasoline powered vehicles. My Seminar in Finance teacher might say otherwise, but I think it would leave oil producers with a large supply of crude (which as of 4/18 is already at an 8 year high) which they would have to get rid of by offering to gas stations at a lower price.

Therefore, a lower demand in gasoline powered vehicles means a lower demand in gasoline production which means a decrease in gasoline prices in the short run. After the current level of crude supply is run down and demand begins to outweigh supply, oil companies could once again charge whatever they want until the remaining gasoline buyers decide to use another type of fuel.

Of course, all of this is dependent upon there being another source of fuel to power cars, truck, planes etc. that is cheaper than gasoline is currently. Otherwise you'd end up spending more and the plan doesn't work.

    what a rediculous idea.
"we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not sellers." <--- stupid statement
only two things influence price...supply and demand. Prices are going up again becaue supply is going down (or the speculation that it will, but more to that at the end,) and demand is going up because of the normal summer increase in driving. Also, refining capacity hasnt fully recovered from the hurricanes yet.
This will backfire more because the price at the smaller gas stations will go up because demand at their pumps is going up. This will inevitably drive people back to the others.
Not to mention the fact that the smaller stations could not keep up the supply to service all the drivers, which will eventually overrun the supply, even if people wanted to spend more money for it.
Also, there are only a few major crude suppliers and refineries, so these "smaller" ones are probably linked with the larger companies anyway.
The main reason gas is high all of a sudden is speculation. People are artifically inflating the price of gas through speculation of a shortage. There is no real shortage yet. I read an article that said that, if speculation wasnt a factor right now, oil would be $35 a barrel. I dont know if thats true though. People are just paying out the nose for it because they think it will be in short supply, and they want more of it for themselves.
So..you want to reduce gas prices for-real?
    1. tell your parents to stop driving their bigass gas sucking behemoth SUV to the mall and get something realistic
    2. stop driving up and down Barrett endlessley for no reason, reving your little vtec or listening to the BOV
or 3.. just drive less in general.
all of these reduce demand and will reduce prices.

Good points. Americans still reminisce about the days when gas was $1.25 a gallon and thus, they still drive like gas is $1.25 a gallon. Like you said, people need to be more efficient in the way they drive and also look for cars that are more efficient.

The thing is, (most) people are also making more money nowadays. Until gas gets so expensive that it makes them REALLY think twice about cutting back on driving or so expensive that it FORCES them cut other things out of their budget, it's not going to be a serious concern.

Boycotting gas stations and companies is dumb, we honestly don't make that big of a profit off gasoline. Beer, cigarettes, coffee, fountain drinks. Those are our money makers. Most experts don't know why gas is not $55-58 a barrel, we as a nation are just afraid that it's going to just run out on us so we continue to buy. Gas companies don't set the prices, oil producing nations do.
