Default I feel stupid asking but...

I may sound like a complete idiot, and sorry if I sound like it. I don't know too much about the drift scene, so consider this an honest question trying to get educated.

Why did all the cars drifting have thier front bumper off?? Trying to get more air to the engine and/or intercooler??

Sorry to sound like an idiot, I just loved watching the cars drifting but just couldnt figure out why the front bumpers where removed??

    Thanks for the input.

I see where you are coming from, and understand that. Just playing devils advocate, wouldnt that come with the territory?? You drift or drag race, you expect body damage to happen to your car?

yeah...true... but.. i guess until you're damn good...

i mean.if it was me..id take it off until i was awesome... running over bumpers every event can be expensive... let alone just trying to run the car performance wise..

Again, not trying to ad contreversy, just playing devils advocate.

When I think of a track car, I think of a car that is quick as hell, upgraded as shit, but has the war wounds of its battles.

I would question a drift/ track car that is in mint condition and doesnt have a single rock chip or bug spot on the front end.

I dunno, if your brave enough to drift, why not be brave enough to leave the front bumper on.

Again, not trying to piss people off, just get an understanding on a subject I dont know much about, but willing to learn.

i got ya. I dont know what cars had their bumpers off cause i wasnt there. But i would think the higher end cars like the z's and all that wouldnt want to screw up their front bumper because they are expensive. If a 240 with nothing done to the exterior (no new paint) had theirs off, then idk lol. BUt if someone just shelled out a bunch of money on a new car or paintjob i would admagine they would want to keep it looking that way for shows or DD

Hitting a cone on a fiberglass bumper has enough force to crack it. Not only crack, but possibly break an entire piece off. Ive seen it happen. On my stock bumper though, I can probably plow cones all day, but since its ABS, it wont hurt it for the most part.

So do alot of drift cars have fiberglass bumpers/ body kits?? I would think for weight purposes urethane would be lighter??

It is not so much that the kit will crack but the force when you hit a cone will pull down and back on the bumper cover and will rip the holes out. I know at Drift Expo I saw Dan destroy the front lip and bust the cover after hitting a cone and one car completly ripped off the bumper cover when he hit a cone.. Basically think of a rubber cone as a hand, when you hit it with speed it 'grabs' the cover and pulls becuase the asphalt provides the friction to 'keep it in place' so to speak.

Urethane isn't lighter than fiberglass. I know from experience.

its because drifters are sooooo hardcore they dont need front bumpers and also everybody knows bumpers arent jdm.

I think the reasons very. The 350Z was trailored from TX and came and left without it on. May have been for loading/unloading. Once the mounting tabs are broken they fall off a lot. Adam with the flat green S14 broke the zipties holding his on every heat. I have yet to meet someone who was scared of ruining their kits. Comes with the territory. Eventually I'll get a kit and look forward to eating the occasional cone with it. Most people crack, tape, ziptie, fiberglass, whatever to add life to the parts. It adds character.

Now see, this is what I am talking about. This makes 100% perfect sence to me. A track car is expected to have the shit beat out of it, but continue to persist on the track. That is why I was confused people would drift without a bumper because of fear of messing it up, it comes with the territory of being on the track. This responce makes sence to me.

Again, not forming opinions one way to another, just trying to get insight on a subject I know little about but noticed at the event.
