I don't know that I could be anymore on the fence at the moment.

Doesn't help that my current daily has 200k miles and suddenly started falling apart on me. Dumped 500 bucks on this thing over the last few weeks. Wasting my damn days off wrenching, busting my hands up and so on.

Find the nearest Lexus/Toyota dealer and have it inspected. Worth the few extra bucks.

    Sounds questionable.

What rubs me wrong is the fact that a guy who bought it didn't put the title in his name. Now add on that he'll have the dealership buy it and sell it to you? On top of that, the dealer isn't going to "buy" the car from him for what he is willing to sell it to you for, it will be quite a bit less. So now he puts in his pocket 30% less (pulling a number out of my ass) then he would have made from you...AND is willing to cover TTT, admin fees etc... that all dealerships process with every car they buy and sell? Yeah right. Run away. Let some other sucker take it.

I see it this way- and I'm just pulling general numbers out of my ass for example...just to get the point across.
    #1 sells car for $10k
    #2 buys
#2 willing to sell for $10.5k
#2 is too lazy to put title in name
#2 sells car to dealership for 30% less; puts $7k in pocket
Dealership sells car for whatever they want to now...not in control of #2
Even if dealership now asks $9k, there is TTT/admin fees (let's say $2,000 all said and done for this), so now it's an $11k car out the door
#2 is going to eat the $2k and now have $5k in pocket when all is said and done??? Yeah right. He could have made an easy $10.5k selling it to you.

I'm actually taking Vinnie with me. I heard he can do compression tests by teabagging the cylinder.

I say at least go check it out bud, the manuals are hard as hell to come by, and if you love the car its worth the hassle.

If it doesnt go through, it wasnt meant to be. But youll kick yourself forever if you don't try

Possibly. I don't know the regulations on buying a car out of state and possible taxes. But I've never really heard of someone setting up a deal through a dealership like that It just seems rather queer. Who knows, he might be using his position at the dealership to do these kinds of transactions and not have to put titles in his name in order to buy/sell cars and not get flagged by the state as a dealer himself. If that makes sense. In that case, then I wouldn't see it being a problem if you're OK with the price and everything. The only "shady" part might be on him using the dealership to process titles so he doesn't get in trouble with the state for buying/selling too many cars, personally, in a year....but that shouldn't effect you or the car.

Doesn't sounds shady just sounds like a change in heart. You drive the car the first week and instead of signing it all over get rid of it. I would be more so wanting to buy it if its through the dealership but I'm sure they will not offer any type of warranty, but then again they might since they're taking a chance to buy it hoping you will buy it from the dealership. I would have the techs at the dealership check it out or take it down the road and have it looked at. That's if it's worth all that hassle.

I'd go ahead with it. As long as the car is fine and you have the paperwork/etc in front of you, what is there to be worried about? It's not like you're not checking it out before you buy it as with any car purchase. Worst case if anything does come up fishy, which I doubt given you said he has an internet trail of successful car sales, why be concerned?

I think he was dodging signing over the title because I think a person can only do X title transfers per year before they need a dealers license. He works at a dealership, but doesn't necessarily have a dealer's license.

Your going to have to pay sales tax if he runs it through the dealership
