You'd be surprised. More often than not it will, but you can actually shoot them perfectly in the chest and miss all vital veins/organs/etc. Perhaps you collapse one lung, but not both... You get the idea.Originally Posted by SL65AMG

Very nice discussion. Glad to see everyone is taking advice wisely.
As Ruiner said and linked, here are some of the quick cliff notes as I have them understood:
1. You can have a handgun in 3 places w/o a permit AS LONG AS you are over 21 & not a convicted felon or anything else that would prohibit you from legally owning a gun. Those 3 places are: Home, car, and work (as long as the employer allows it). It has to be in an open and exposed matter ONLY w/o a CCW permit. To "carry" anywhere else besides those 3 places REQUIRES a CCW permit.
2. Deadly threat is a very very gray area. You have to be sure that when you pull you gun out of it's holster ANY time, there is a VERY good reason for it. Merely brandishing a weapon will get you put in jail if there is no "REAL" threat to you or others. Law clearly says that there only certain times where you can use deadly force, and most are very ambigious and up to the individual's judgement. Something that scares my wife into pulling out her gun, may not be the same thing that scares me into pulling out mine.
3. IF you are ever in a situation where deadly force IS going to be used....stopping the threat is the only priority. 1 shot, 2 shots, or more is irrelevant. If 1 shot "stops" the threat, then it's over at 1 shot. If you shoot someone, they go "down" and you CONTINUE to shoot because they are wiggling on the ground.....you're committing a crime. Once the physical threat is equalized, you are supposed to restrain yourself from continuing to purposely injuring the individual.
the stuff about reloading that can also get you put in jail. A friend of mine was bein jacked at a gas station and pulled his pistol and emptied a clip at the guy. he was a really shitty shot and only grazed him but he reloaded when the guy started to run and then emptied another and was locked up because it was no longer self defense
i have had a group of ppl i think there were like 5 try and take my car in a gas station the only thing that got me out of there was the 9 i had in the pouch on the back of my passenger seat since then I have added a 20 rd clip tho my Ruger p89th limited edition. I also came home one day to see 2 men coming out of my basement w/ 4 of my rifles and was able to pull my pistol and get the drop on them after i called the police its always handy to carry protection
nice...my dad is plannin to give me his Ruger .45 cal since im already 21
agreed, since i'm late on this, i'd say at the light, 1 (pistol not at me, run and gun, i'd get some space between me if i could but if i couldn't most of the time if your quick enough a shot in the air will startle someone enough to give you a second or two to get some distance in a car and fire regardless if they are direct hits, bullets in the air are bullets.... most crimals won't stand their ground they will find a place to take cover IMO.
gun at me, i'd say have a nice day but be sure to see if i could get a second without him seeing to grab my gun. if that happens have a nice day then i'd light my car up and hope i hit'm.
Rugers are good pistols my mom bought mine for me about 2 yrs ago for christmas
well, if it was me, I honestly do not know what I'd do, my first instinct would be to get out and let him take it.. however, if I was truely paying attention, I would have seen the gun while he was walking to my car and from then, I would have run the person over..
I do not carry a gun, nor do I know how to operate a gun, it may be simple, but I've never been instructed. My boyfriend has one on him at all times, then again, he's kinda a cop...
:boobies: &= :idb:
yeah as far as the "shoot to kill" , i was given a very stern warning from a retired cop when i went to buy my frst gun. i was in the gun shop when i turned 21 and was going to buy my gun. well i mentioned the phrase "self-defense" followed by"shoot to kill" and with a sersious ass face he told me, " you are not shooting to kill in a self defense situation. cause if that situation comes and you tell the cops you were shooting to kill, your ass will be in jail." the look in his face and tone of his voice was enough to make me rethink that phrase, but the good thing is that right after he said that, some of the folks that overheard our conversation that were gun owners themselves told me almost in unison " you are not shooting to kill, your shooting to stop the threat." with some of them laughing at the end. damn i felt like a true NOOB after that.
amen to that..i can't wait to get a gun mwah ahhaha..i should have fun at the local shooting ranges blasting the head off the paperOriginally Posted by ahmonrah

well im alittle late in on this but i believe i would try to get away in both situations. IDK depends on what car im in. i dont care what they have i work hard for what i got and im not about to give it away. i dont carry a gun (yet. im 20) so i couldnt shoot back. on the other hand my dad has three guns in the car at all times and always has one on him. he keeps a 22 on him, a 9mm behind the seat and a 357 under the seat. hes had to pull the 357 (it was in the seat at the time under his jacket) on someone once and believe me they backed off pretty quick.
One Big Ass Mistake America
I think there is a little confusion with some of the statements made.
1. It is absolutely true that if there ever was a situation where you are being questioned about a shooting you certainly don't want to come off as some crazed murderer by saying you were "shooting TO kill". It comes off as OFFENSIVE rather than DEFENSIVE. Very true.
2. In this discussion, I believe the term of "shooting to kill" was being addressed as a rebuttal to some people saying they'd "shoot to WOUND" or "shoot at their arms, legs, buttocks, etc". In other words, it is unrealistic to shoot someone to maim rather than to put 2 in the chest as you should. So, what some people are saying, including myself, is that if you pull the trigger it SHOULD be to take care of the threat which means there is a high possibility of death by default. If someone is NOT ready to ACCEPT that basic fact, they should not be a gun owner IMO. It's like using a sledge hammer to nail in a picture frame. ANY gun can KILL, period. If YOU pull the trigger, you better KNOW that is a possibility (death). If you have a problem with that, put the gun down and fight with your fists.
3. As has been stated many times here, the law allows you to defend yourself with a caveat. That caveat is that you can only defend yourself with the amount of force necessary to STOP the threat. The HIGHER the threat, the higher the force allowed to stop it. IF a perpetrator turns and runs, the threat is LEAVING....i.e. it has STOPPED.....so therefore you emptying (sp?) your magazine into their back is NOT self defense. IF in turn, you shoot him and he keeps reaching for a weapon to SHOOT YOU with, then you can continue to shoot until THAT threat stops. There is a big difference.
If someone points a gun at your face, you now have the legal right to defend yourself with as much force as is being applied towards you. If that is with a gun, then you have a decision to make. If it's with a stick, rake, umbrella....it doesn't matter....you now have been threatened to a heightened level and therefore can protect yourself until that threat is gone. If you kill him with an umbrella to the testicles or 2 to the chest, he is just as dead either way.
Moral of the story: Gun ownership comes with a HUGE responsibility. If you are unclear as to when to use a gun against a threat, do NOT buy a gun until you have that crystal clear in your mind.
