    people do it to me all the time.

    I wouldn't worry about it too much, just dont make it a regular thing.

    Next time you talk to them, just apologize, usually people, if they have had time to deal with it understand.

    People say shit unintentionally about my mom all the time.

    Any intelligent person will rationalize that you didn't know, not to mention this person never had a relationship with their mother. Its not like they died last week.

    Just let them know that you didn't realize and you never recalled a conversation that entailed her passing away. That you are sorry and then just make the effort not to bring it up. I don't ever talk shit (even joking) about mother's just because of my experience.
