Broke down as in "OMFG!!! I THINK SOMETHING IS ABOUT BREAK!!!! LET ME SAVE MY ENGINE OH NOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111" The terms should be at minimum that it runs poorly almost to the point of self destruction or worse. For example, "it's running on 5 cylinders, I think I dropped a valve..." that type of breaking.
