NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Crude futures extended their slump Wednesday after the U.S. government reported stockpiles of gasoline and distillate fuels each rose a fourth straight week.
Light, sweet crude for August delivery was recently down $1.26, or 2%, at $61.67 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude on the ICE Futures exchange was $1.18 lower at $62.05 a barrel.
The Energy Information Administration said that in the week ended July 3, U.S. gasoline inventories gained 1.9 million barrels and inventories of distillates, which include diesel and heating oil, rose a hefty 3.7 million barrels. Each increase topped analyst estimates.
Crude stockpiles fell by 2.9 million barrels to 347.3 million barrels, an above-average level for this point in the summer.
"Even though crude stockpiles continue to tighten, in the end the bottom line is about product demand and product stocks - that's what we consume," said Michael Wittner, global head of oil research at Societe Generale. "There nothing constructive at all in those numbers. On the contrary, it's bearish."
The EIA said gasoline demand rose 1.9% in the week heading into the U.S. Independence Day holiday, but remained lower than a year earlier.
Crude has lost more than $10 from its 2009 high above $73 a barrel hit last week. The decline comes as analysts rethink the prospects of a global demand rebound. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries on Wednesday lowered longer-term demand forecasts, downgrading its 2013 consumption projection by 5.7 million barrels a day and its 2030 outlook by 7.7 million barrels a day.
