This is all I wanted to know. I find it quite interesting that not one other male in this thread finds this bit of info....odd.

    Glocks do have "safeties".

There are lots of choices in .40 cal that are inexpensive and compact.

What kind of budget are you working with?

    ^^^ Funny.

I used to carry my Combat Commander exclusively, but then I switched to my S&W 457. I also used to carry my Firestar .40 a lot because of it's size.

I'm different than most though. I don't mind weight at all. I guess carrying the Commander for so long, it doesn't bother me. I will admit that carrying the Glock that I carry now is much more comfortable and sometimes I don't even remember it's there.

True story: I almost walked right into a hospital's emergency room the other day with it on me. I noticed the sign on the door and as I walked a little further I remembered I had mine on me. I had to go back and put it in the car.

LOL I tested out a 45's not 40 but I love the HK's and Colt's. Way comfortable. Everyone's hand is different so you have to play with the grips. Glocks feel nice but I like the sturdiness and the grip on the Hk's and Colt's way better.

I was gonna recommend a compact Kimber 1911, but since you want to stay under $600, the XD is probably the way to go....that or the S&W M&P.....actually, I would take the Smith over the Springfield....

Compact 1911's don't have the best reliabilty though.

Get the sub compact springfield xd .40 cal. Comes with two different mags one for a 3 finger grip and one to make it a full hand grip. They also have a lot of safety's. Also you can find them for less then 500

Don't listen to anyone telling you what to get.
You need to get out there and try them out. You need one that fits you best and you like the way it shoots.
Go to the fucckin gun crew thread in lifestyles. I know it don't make sense, but gun people are in there.

I don't give a fucck if he is you're dad. If he just went out and bought the one you recommend with out testing the fit or the way it shoots and then he don't like it, then what?

And what he said...shoot everything you can get youre hands on...

For me I can pick up the Springfield and without hesitation put one right in the middle of the paper at 33 feet...most violent encounters happen within 33 feet. I want to know if someone is holding a human shield that I have the skill and confidence to put it right between there eyes.

I carry and H&K and I like it. I really like the Springfield XD better as a carry weapon but it has the same safety's as a glock basically.

As far as carrying a 1911 goes, I love 1911s I had 10 of them at one point but its not what I would choose as my carry weapon. Even the compacts are big and heavy and even Wilsons aren't reliable enough for me.

I trust the springfield so much that I bought my brother one to carry at work.

I agree 1911's are great, I love my Kimber, but, not an ideal choice to "carry". It is a little on the heavy side and is not as comfortable as a glock on the body.

    XD is nice.

I liked the XD's a lot when I tried them the other day. Didn't get to shoot them though. I have heard they have problems with rust but I'm not to sure though.

The earlier models did, but springfield took care of it and fixed the issue free of charge. Apparently it was a bad batch where something happened with the finish they were using. All the new ones at the stores and such wont have this problem.
