try booting into safe mode.....also, right click your desktop, and in the "arrange icons by..." menu, check to see that the option 'show desktop icons" is checked....

if this doesn't help, just restore the computer back to a date when it was working fine by using the windows system restore tool...start>all programs>acessories>system tools>system restore....
