I thought airplane engines are supposed to run at constant RPMs, not variable RPMs like automobile engines. Anyway, it's still awesome when VTEC KICKS IN j0!

uhh, that's helicopter engines silly...airplanes have to have variable throttle or you'd never be able to take off, ascend, or land

not exactly, at cruise in a recip. plane, rpm's are at a constant 2300-2400. Majority of the time, 70% of the flight is in a cruise configuration.

That's no differant than a car on a highway trip...70% cruising in high gear but what about the other 30% starting and stopping? A helicopter can easily remain a constant RPM from take off to landing but that would be kinda difficult in a plane, pretty sure any passengers would have a heart attack if that was tried ...BUT then again most people i've met from NYC drive like that, as if the gas and brake are on-off switches and there is no in-between.
