I had a similar thing happen to me once. I got bitten on my hand and it swelled to the size of a grapefruit. When it started swelling it hurt pretty bad.
What your Dad has is called cellitis, and is treatable with anit-biotics, iirc. I went to a doctor and got a shot and a prescription and was in much better shape in a day or two.
You'll probably think I'm lying, but I shit you not when I say cat saliva is actually venomous. That's why when a bird gets bit by a cat but escapes with out serious injuries it will still die.
