What if a Company Keeps Paying You?
So I have a friend who worked for a company a while ago. She had direct deposit from that company previously. She no longer works for the company, but have just recently started paying her on accident. There it's happened a few times now.
So can the company somehow repossess the money?? Any legal ramifications?

If I was her, I would just keep track of the money that comes in and use it kinda like a savings account. I wouldnt spend it until I was 100% sure that it couldnt come back to me.

Trust me, I'm an accountant and one of my many functions here is to do the payroll for my company and I have for years. They can reverse it as easily as they deposited it. It can be at any time and they do not own her any explanation. As was said, if she tries to hide it, she's stealing.
It could be caught today, tomorrow, next week, next time they are audited or any time in between.
One is starts showing up on their quarterly payroll tax forms or they go to mail her a W-2, someone will notice if they haven't before.

I guess the morally right thing to do would be to contact the company and let them know, what did she end up doing if this was years ago?
what kind of company is it? Are they really slack and full of morons or just huge and have no audit controls?
And who is to say they won't catch it this time. They can take it back at any time.

I dont remember the exact story but wasnt there a lady in the news like forever ago that she recieved a check and she knew it was either the wrong amount or that the check was an error and went and spent the money anyways, and they came back and she got in trouble for spending it... I mean as nice as it would be to get "free" money, sometimes the right thing is the best thing to do esp if it's something that they can come back and prove that you knew you shouldn't be receiving it..
