    Default KA-broken timing chain

has anyone ever heard of a timing CHAIN breaking? it just happened in my altima. my mechanic says he's never seen one break, and he's seen alot! the engine is still turning. but i don't think replacing the chain would fix it. what do you guys think? something caused that chain to break and i am sure it would happen again, or something worse.

Yes KA's are bad about Timing chains and Tensioner/guides having issues. It is easier to fix on rwd KA IMO.
Timing chains can break easy they can get worn,Stretched all kinda stuff.
It can be replaced and run great. If it was a OEM chain then it needs replaced anyways to last longer.
Just be sure to change the Tensioners/Guides also it will be a whole kit.

thanks man, it a bit harder on the FWD seeing the chain is over on the side. Since i won't be doing it, {unless i buy another car first.} it would probelly be cheaper to get a whole new engine. My friend works at a tire shop and they have that estimate software. It estimated 12 hours to change a timing chain on a 1994 Altima!

It does take a long time to change the chain on a fwd car. I am not sure it would be cheaper to get a whole new engine swapped in.

i can't say for sure if the valves bent, but i don't think so. Still wondering what caused it.

Which chain broke? There's 2 on that motor.

    K series 626. That's right. It's got a K in it.

Get a new motor. I can almost bet that once you take the heads off that not only are you gonna see some bent valves, but possible piston damage too.

Theres a lot of articles on how to fix your timing chain on your KA, check like 240sx forums, nico, zilvia, they have info on how to change your chains or how to center, etc. etc. everything you need to know..
